I just came back from seeing Tron for a second time (this time just in 2D). I liked it even better the second time. I sure wished this movie did better at the box office because I really wanted to see a sequel. There were so many possibilities at the end to explore in a sequel. And is it just me or does the ending (with Hedlund's and Wilde's character) remind you of the original theatrical ending of Blade Runner?

It does actually. Hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it though but I can see it.

Olivia Wilde Wants More; Tron: Legacy a Blockbuster
LMAO "hugging toasters." :lmao: Olivia is adorable.

Did anyone notice the audio editing error at the end of the film? When Sam's talking to Allen there's a harsh high-pitched cut. A few of my friends couldn't hear it, so I take it the audio editor couldn't, but I'm going to notice it every freaking time now...
I didn't notice anything, and bad sound is worse than bad picture, haha. Have you seen it multiple times and heard it every single time? It might have been a one-time glitch.

That's like the time I noticed the sound of a woman sneezing in Batman Begins when Alfred and Bruce ride the elevator down after the mansion catches on fire. And Bruce looks up and says "What have I done, Alfred?" And you hear the sneeze. every. time.

I think movies have to double their budget to make a profit.

As long as you beat the budget you make a profit. For it to be considered a SUCCESS in Hollywood you gotta make double your budget.

Saw it last night and definitely the best movie i've seen this year!

If they go with another Tron, I can see the guys at Pixar getting even more involved with the scripting process, just like how Pixar is 'unofficially' involved with John Carter of Mars.

The movie has barely opened anywhere WW yet. The domestic gross isn't bad but I think that we need to wait until more international #'s come in before were start making assumptions about how successful or unsuccessful the film is.

"Beating the budget" requires a movie to do much more than matching the budget in gross receipts alone. :oldrazz:

Yeah, but this is Superhero Hype! The place where the blind lead the blind and turn box office discussion into unintended humour. :woot:

But when talking about a sequel to a movie you can throw the box office numbers right out the window, theres been many films that got sequels with bad box office records not to mention bad reviews

So anything goes really, its all up to Disney if they think the general audience wants another Tron movie

I can say right now it's NOT the runaway hit that Disney had hoped for. I don't care if the WW totals are not finalized. Even with talking to my friends and coworkers about it, nobody is riding the train. Hell, people are talking more publicly about Black Swan and True Grit than Tron. Or at least with the people I know.

If they do go with the sequel, they will have to have another strategy.

I think it's a bloody brilliant film. I was hooked from start to finish.

Same here. I wish the Matrix sequels had been this good.

The office I work at people are generally mid 20's to early 50's. So I've heard water cooler talk about Black Swan only pretty much when it comes to movie talk. However the people I hang around are early 20's for the most part and well they all dug on it. I mean the fact that most of us got drunk or high before seeing the IMAX 3D lol probably helped. But people I've spoken to at parties and in my overall social scene pretty much dug the light & sound show that it often is.

Another friend of mine manages a Toys R' Us store and told me that the toys have been selling really really well surprisingly. Disney's aim with this was to take this lost & extra niche IP and reestablish it for further exploitation with a new generation. Through TV cartoons, toys, video games and a new film. So if little boys are hopping aboard then they succeeded in their mission on that part. I could see Disneyland/World attractions in the future too. It's about recreating a brand they couldn't really pimp.

As far as the movies go I think eventually when you factor in tv rights and home video sales they'll consider a new one. That and this is Disney home of Cinderella II and Simba's Pride amongst many others. They shamefully sequelize anything they can. It seems to be tracking in the $5 to $6 million daily figures so eventually I think it will reach at least $170 domestic. IF and only IF they keep it around till feb. Still not a return on the investment yet but this is more large scale in the long run than your typical blockbuster. It's a new brand for Disney to put out there and sell ****loads of toys with.

If they do make a follow up I just hope it has a tight & more in depth story the one element where it failed compared to where it succeeded as everywhere else a blockbuster type movie should (action, effects, score, above average acting).

I know this is a family movie and to be honest I enjoyed the purely fantastical element of it. As a kid of the late 80's I appreciated the basicness in the entire presentation. Reminded me of movies I grew up on like Predator and Monster Squad.

You could still have a decent story though to appeal to a family audience. With that said it wasn't that much a hinderence for some reason I just really dug this. So much so I'm gonna see it again in IMAX 3D this thursday. I've never rewatched any movie I saw in IMAX except TDK. Not Batman Begins not Inception not AVATAR which was in 3D no less, not 300 not Watchmen. So that says something cause I really dug 300 and AVATAR not so much Inception though Watchmen was more ok than most say it was.

I could safely say I enjoyed this more than Terminator 4, the first Transformers since I never bothered with the second same with Fantastic Four as well as any of the Matrix sequels or Star Wars prequels. I don't know I was just very much entertained it all just clicked. Still it doesn't mean it shouldn't have a tighter story. Also bring back Daft Punk :yay:

It's not just about BO results. Merchandising and franchising counts for something as well for a company like Disney, I would think.

Don Simpson always said you had to triple the budget to break even.

Course, ever since the 70s, they pull an accounting trick to make most blockbusters look like they made zero profit, as a tax saving move, and as a means to not pay actors and producers of they have a % deal.

Advertising goes into the budget of the film. Merchandising and partnerships generate revenue for the products in question and only use the money from the gross receipts if merchandising/partnerships fail. You can't include all those different revenue sources into one pot - and I never said MATCH.

Again - for the FILM to make profit it just needs to beat it's budget, but for the FILM to be considered a success, it must make at least DOUBLE it's budget.

The billion dollar toy sales was the whole reason CARS got a CARS 2, as that film barely broke even.

Need to factor the fact theaters take about 55% of ticket sales, plus the possibilty of upfront deals any of the diretor, actors, producers get, and a lot of films have advertising seperate from budget(I don't know if TRONS was part ads but I doubt it, plus all the money funneled into developing not only this version of TRON but all the wasted expenses on past development of sequels.

Upfront deals are included in the budget, and the box office numbers usually subtract the theater profit. And advertising numbers are almost always kept separate from evaluating the films budget and revenue. What the advertising agents do is not the responsibility of the producer.
