I loved Tron inspite of it having a pretty weak storyline and mediocre acting with the exception of Jeff Bridges and David Warner. The actor who played Ram was okay and I was sad when Ram died.
My likes:
I liked the intro to the movie inspite of there being virtually no explanation about what was going on.
I found the villians in the movie to be far more interesting than the heroes. All of the scenes with Ed Dillinger, Sark, and the MCP were good. The MCP scared the crap out of me when I saw it for the first time as a little kid.
The CGI was fantastic for it's time. I was obsessed with this movie and the Star Wars series until Aliens came along in 1986.
The soundtrack was unique, very touching, and quite appropriate for the computer world. It's strange but, the main theme of Tron always made me feel sad while listening to it.
This movie had some of the coolest action sequences I had ever seen during the 80s:
Clu's tank vs. the Recognizers
Tron vs. mutiple disc throwing warriors
Flynn vs. Crom
Light Cycle Battles
Tron vs. Sark
Dislikes: I got bored with the movie quickly after Clu dies. I didn't get back into the film until Flynn gets pulled into the computer world.
I found the Solar Sailor escape to be underwhelming.
This movie could have used some narration to explain the rules of the tron world, the history of it, and how it relates to the real world.
I was disappointed with the ending. The battle between Sark and Tron was cool but, it should have been longer.
There should have been an epic battle between the programs controlled by the MCP and the ones who wanted to be free. I guess Disney didn't have the budget for this back then.
I just saw TRON for the first time today (I was born a year after it came out). The effects in that film were amazing considering it was made in the early 80's. A lot of hard work was put into that film. The film itself was just ok, but I was more interested in the tech. I have a feeling 'Legacy' will be much more enjoyable for me.
we know that it is a sequel. i just hope that its presented in a way so that the general public will understand the story. because if they expect them to watch the first movie then they are stupid.
I have to agree. The majority of people who see 'Legacy' will not have seen the original 'Tron'. Part of me wonders if they should have just started a completely new story aka reboot? Hopefully there won't be much confusion. Surely they'll recap what happened in the first film, so people won't be scratching their heads.
Everything I've seen of this movie has just been stunning. If the story is half as good as the visuals, T:L will be the biggest movie of the year.
I honestly think that this film will blow (some) people away more than Avatar. And that's not a slight on James Cameron's film... I really liked Avatar. I'm just saying that Tron looks absolutely phenomenal.
I actually think I'll be more blown away by this film's fantasy 3D world then I was by Avatar. Not to diss Avatar, but I find the idea of a virtual city to be way more amazing and visually appealing to my nerd sensibilities then an alien jungle planet.

Tron is one of those movies where it either clicks with you or it doesn't.
I love the first movie and there's something highly endearing watching it now with its limited understanding of computers yet managed to become in my opinion one of many great sci fi movies.
The reason why Tron: Legacy excites me beyond the great effects shown in the trailer is the line "This is going to change all medicine, government and religion".
I can't wait and see how Legacy handled the internet something the first Tron didn't have but now is an actually fully realized function.
I think that's exactly it, home PC's were just starting to gain popularity, and a public internet was over a decade away. Now we live our lives by the internet, and carry around "phones" that are really tiny computers that keep us constantly connected to the virtual world.

I don't think a reboot is necessary. A sequel that doesn't require viewing of the original is fine. I saw a lot of sequels in my time before I saw the originals (it actually took me many years to see Terminator 1 after seeing Terminator 2 as a kid). What matters is this film stands on it's own and seeing the original is only necessary for "Gee, so that's where that thing or character first showed up."
I think the fact the story will probably be all told from the son's perspective means the majority of the audience will be introduced to the Tron world when he is introduced, making it a good concept for a sequel that wouldn't require viewing of the original film to appreciate. Whatever will need explanation will probably be explained to the son when he progresses through the film.
