Yep it's based on a Mexican tellanovella. It says right in the credits. "Based on Betty La Fre" Also most of the stories are nearly straight translations (the jokes are adjusted for english) of the Mexican show.

Just started over here a few weeks ago. It really is a great show, mainly due to Betty herself. She is such a likeable character that you just can't help but root for her.

Actually, "Ugly Betty" and "La Fea mas Bella" (the mexican version) are both based on a Colombian telenovela and each has its own storyline but the same premise, an unattractive but intelligent woman working in an enviroment that values beauty over brains.

I understand the criticisms, but I think it's a pretty good show. While the concept isn't mindblowing, it's decent feel-good, light-lifting TV that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people.

This show has a decent feel good core, and a very likeable lead.

However the premise is weak, acting annoyingly OTT, and for a 'comedy' show, its not funny.

This show is greatness! Amanda and Marc are the new Karen and Jack.

And the mother probably killed her since her husband was having an affair with her and wasnt putting any love into his marriage.
