Yeah, it was implied that the reason they're not together anymore is because Nate prioritized his treasure hunting over Elena. Their conversation about how Nate gets into all these death-defying adventures, where Nate accuses Elena of enjoying them just as much and she sternly but kind of sadly denies it, along with Nate's apology in the hotel room, seemed to indicate that Nate might be a little addicted to the thrill of chasing after treasures and knowledge as a means of escaping from a "real" life, which a stable, happy marriage to Elena symbolizes.
They definitely worked the break-up and romantic tension into the story well enough. My point is that it's just straight-up unnecessary. We've had 2 full games of "will they/won't they" romantic tension, and the ending of U2 made it pretty clear that Nate's heart was committed to Elena whether he wanted to admit it or not. The prospect of her death was pretty much unthinkable to Drake at the end of U2. That's dedication of a more than friendly sort. I guess my point is that they do the whole break-up/get back together spiel in U2 as a means of symbolizing Drake's desire to ultimately be a good man (as opposed to being a dishonorable thief by taking Chloe's offer to run off halfway through, forget about Lazarevic, and just be happy with her). It felt totally unnecessary and frankly kind of boring to rehash that same plot again in U3.
I couldn't agree more man. I brought up the same complaint a few pages back. The min i saw the characters meet on screen i just had to roll my eyes and say "are you kidding me, again!?"
[BLACKOUT]Id really like for ND to lock them up next go round. Maybe even give them a baby, have Drake really question why he's on what ever adventure he finds himself on. [/BLACKOUT]
