Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Part 1

Im all for a new IP and frankly dont think they need to do another PS3 game. Let them gear up for a PS4 title assuming that comes out in 2013. I definetly dont think we need another Uncharted game this gen. Id be all for a spinoff of the series, which stars a different protagonist in the lead role.

Maybe ND can do what Insomniac and Sucker Punch did before them by releasing a shorter game based on their universe on the PSN? A game starring young Sully with Drake in a supporting role could be fun. That could be something to bridge the gap until their next big release

I want them to go with Uncharted 4, next.
If possible, in 2 years, like the second and third games.

Just finished the game, it wasn't a step up from Uncharted 2 but kept the quality at the same level IMO. The prequel level, the sinking ship set piece and the plane set piece were all awesome but not as good as the train set piece in Uncharted 2. The caravan attack and the ending sequence felt like they were direct rips of levels from Uncharted 2 (you'll know the ones I mean) with a new suit on, but all in all great fun.

One thing they could have done was delve a bit more into how apparently Nate and Elena cot married between 2 and 3, that was vaguely handled.

Beat it on crushing last night not that hard only difficult parts in the game were fighting the big guy with the machine gun on the boat and the djin at the end

Yeah I beat it a few days ago on Crushing, started a third playthrough but i'm currently consumed by UMvC3. :awesome:

The enemies that throw 3 grenades at once are almost as annoying as the rocket launchers

What was Nate and Elena's relationship at the end of 2? I forget.

It ended with them sharing their first kiss and engaging in humorous conversation as the camera faded away

Well, the first kiss we saw. It was obvious Drake and Elena had had a relationship in the space between Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves in which they probably banged n' stuff.

I like what they did in Uncharted 3 with that, in that they continued their theme that Drake has trouble giving up his love for danger and adventure, and gives up his engagement with Elena to continue pursuing it. Still think the writing is the strongest in 3, pretty handily. I'm playing through it again right now, and have yet to see any weaknesses and I'm at the boat level. even the head pirate is a great character, haha. They tend to hit the theme on the head a lot, and pretty forcefully, but it works in context, and at least there is a theme in this one, haha, one that is set up by the crazy **** that happens in the first two, with all the characters' lack of assessment of danger. It felt long overdue, imo that the other characters especially started to doubt what the actual gain of these adventures actually was. It's nice that instead of it just being to 'save the world from an evil man' storyline, it felt personal to Drake for once.

There was a theme in UC2, one that was pretty well crafted.

The light and dark sides of Drake himself, as personified by Elena and Chloe, respectively.

Marriage, not engagement. I wouldn't have minded as much if it were just an engagement. I'm not really 100% sure why, but leaving a fiancee to scratch your adventurous itch just doesn't seem as bad as leaving a wife.

Do they specifically say they were married? I thought they just mentioned the ring.

Either way works for me. In fact, since all problems are amplified, it would almost make more sense for it to be too much for them to handle, haha.

Fair enough, regarding the theme to Uncharted 2, I'll have to replay it and see. It just never seemed like any of it seemed impactful to the story though, from what I remember. It felt more like just an awkward situation that Nate's trying to avoid rather than a 'dark' vs 'light' conflict, haha.

One of these days I'm going to play all three games in a row just to see how they evolve Nate throughout the series.

Elena had a wedding band, not engagement ring. Engagement rings have a jewel on it, in most cases diamond. Wedding bands generally are just circular with no jewel embedded in them. Men dont have typically have engagement rings either. What Drake had was a matching wedding band. Their status isnt stated but its implied by the jewelery they both carried.

As far as UC2, I thought it was quite apparent with Drake's past coming back to haunt him. The early mission with took place in the past set the stage for the character progression he would untertake throughout the game.

Man you should have played through all of them right now! LOL...my mission in October was to play an UC game every 2 weeks leading up to 3 by November and it was a very satisfying experience

Uncharted 2 wasn't exactly a "light vs dark" theme, but more along the lines of what kind of man/person did Nate wanted to be. He risked his life for both Chloe and Elena, meaning there was a part of the life that they represented that he wanted. With Chloe, he could've been selfish, a theif who was only interested in his own personal gain, hence he was supposed to leave with Chloe after she betrayed Lazarevic. But with Elena, he could've been heroic and put aside his own desires in order to what was right, which was to give up on taking whatever treasures the Lost City had and making sure that Lazarevic didn't get it either, or else he would hurt lot of other innocent people.

Chloe and Elena also represented which part of Nate's life did he want. Chloe was a safe choice because they had been together before, where Nate walked away because of his own selfish ambitions, and because we were also to assume he was a bit of a womanizer, so walking away was a habit since he never allowed himself to get too attached. But Elena represented growth and change, since even though he had strong feelings for her, he was unwilling to admit it because she wasn't a safe choice, seeing as how they were two different people after different thing.

There was definitely a personal struggle with both his heart and his mind, but with U#, the struggle was much more personal and deeper than that since Drake had to come face to face with what caused him to put adventure and thrill seeking ahead of what he felt was most important to him. The relationship stuff was handled more subtle, but I think by the end it all tied in together how everything was related and how Drake decided to stop trying to balance things and finally make a choice to give something up for good.

Apparently I really need to play it again, because I don't even remember a level set in the past, haha. And i just played that game a few months back. I just wasn't playing close attention to the story, just flying through the badass set pieces.

Good points all round, and good analysis SpideyVille. I definitely think I just enjoyed/felt a better connection to the personal theme of U3 rather than the relationship theme of 2, but I'll see when i play them through again.

Holy moly... Alright, so I'm finally playing this game, and maybe I'm not used to it anymore because I haven't played Uncharted 2 in a while or maybe I've just played too much Halo, but damn do the controls feel sluggish. I barely hit anything.

Yes the aiming in this game was a problem for me shook to much everytime you fired

I thought it was just my tv causing the aim lag...until I went into multiplayer and found no lag. They should really patch that for the campaign. I was still able to make it through the game on crushing...but compared to the other 2 games, there's definitely something off about the aiming.

I think the game feels overall more sluggish, like Nate is less responsive or even moves too much. Like when I want to move him into a certain spot, it takes a bit before I get him exactly where I want

Naughty Dog have announced they're patching the game for optional U2 style aiming, so there's that. Personally prefer U3's but okay.

The movement didn't feel nearly as tight and polished as it did in previous installments to me. There were several moments where I accidentally jumped Drake into tight, awkward spaces and he got stuck there. I had to load my previous save.

I also found Nate's fascination with touching walls kind of weird.
