While this had been talked about over two years ago, we received fresh Intel this morning that Universal Pictures has lined up Strike Entertainment (Dawn of the Dead, The Thing) to produce a remake of The Funhouse. In the 1981 film directed by Tobe Hooper, a group of naughty teens are locked in a carnival fun house with a man in a frankenstein mask. The studio is out to writers to begin development. Check out the trailer for the original inside.

Never really seen it, so I can't say much about it.

omg..why can't they just make a ripoff instead? doesn't it cost more money for the rights?

Isn't there an RL Stine book of the same name/similar premise? I don't know if it's quite the same 'cos i never read it.

Eli Roth Hoping to Reopen 'Funhouse'

We broke the news exclusively a few weeks back that Strike Entertainment was working with Universal on Funhouse, a remake of Tobe Hooper's classic film from 1981 that follows four teenage friends who spend the night in a carnival funhouse and are stalked by a deformed man in a frankenstein mask. This evening Fangoria added some extra juice to the story as they report Eli Roth is in talks to direct.

“I’m talking with Universal about that one,” Roth reveals. “THE FUNHOUSE is a movie where the first half is brilliant—they set up these great characters—and then they pay off none of them. You have Marco the Magician sawing his daughter in half, the brothers who run the carnival and the funhouse setting. And then it’s all about this weird mutant thing. It should be about the kids getting killed in horrible ways, put in different contraptions in the funhouse and the final girl being strapped into the ride and sent into the tunnels to be confronted by terrifying tableaux of her dead friends. A smart remake could be so much fun. Kill the kids in fabulous ways and continually reuse the bodies by making them freaks in the freak museum, sew their eyes shut, waxworks… That’s the stuff I want to do in a remake of THE FUNHOUSE.”

I remember this movie that dude in the frankenstein suit was creepy as hell.

I was half asleep when this movie came on....all I can remember is some dude's ******ed scream......****ing scary man.

I heard the remake is gonna be more based off of that urban legend that turned out to be true, where the bodies for the Hall of Horror or whatever it was called turned out to be real. People kept on disappearing from the towns it traveled to. Either way, I would actually like to see an update of this film. The original is considered to be a kind of classic. When it comes to remaking films that are a part of huge franchises, I usually end up seeing them but I don't really get psyched about 'em though (except for Halloween and Friday the 13th, I personally love those), but I usually like it when they update a single film. I hope they do one of The Burning, I would love to see an update of that.

I remember this film. Pretty creepy when the freak kills the prostitute.
