Venom now has a stand alone film, according to the studio.

Isn't it weird that carnage has more of a supporting cast than Venom? He has shriek at least.

Anyway, wasn't expecting this casting!

Loved Tom Hardy as Bane in the Dark Knight Rises but also loved him in Mad Max Fury Road as Max Rockatanksy...so to see Tom Hardy in a CBM again but this time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe I will say Disney/Marvel got it right as far as casting goes for Eddie Brock/Venom

Wow this thread been around since 08!

Hated this idea then ..............hated now.

You hate it because of the fact that Marvel cast Hardy as Venom

...Doesn't Venom work better if Spider-Man's involved? How would this work? Never did like Venom as a character anyways.

The article says that this movie is part of Sony's Marvel Universe, so no.

If it is a part of Sony's universe it is still a good casting choice but if Venom were brought into the Tom Holland universe then obviously Disney/Marvel would have to cast someone younger in the role

This is going to crash and burn with Avi Arad steering it.

Hardy's great, but this is horrible news for those who want Spidey to continue his adventures in the MCU. If Venom is successful, it's very likely that Sony will pull Peter after his five movie commitment and introduce him into the Avi-Verse for a showdown with, oh I don't know, six or so previously established baddies. If you want Spidey to continue in the MCU you hope this flops.

Personally, I don't see the viability of a Venom movie, even with Tom Hardy as the lead. Is Venom still popular enough to have a solo movie, especially without Spider-Man involved?

Then again, let's see how far this movie will come along with production, especially with Sony being involved. Don't forget how "involved" Sony was with Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the results of that movie. Heck, Channing Tatum was signed on for a solo Gambit movie and look how far along that movie was!

I can understand why some people are apprehensive about this, but Hardy is pretty selective with his roles and tends to pick good projects. And when he hasn't (Suicide Squad), he's been smart enough to drop out. At least that time. And he's also at the point in his career where he can do what he wants; I don't think he would shackle himself to a sinking ship for a paycheck.

The only thing I find weird about the whole thing is how Sony seems to be poaching former Batman franchise actors (Keaton, Hardy) while the DCEU is poaching former Spider-Man talent (Defoe, Simmons and possibly Raimi).

With the director and writer's involved, I suppose it could be hit or miss.

If an R-rated movie, it would make even more sense to do as something outside the MCU as it would make this a distinct entry into the superhero genre (as opposed to a part of many). The producers or studio getting cold feet due to an inflated budget and mandating a pg-13 rating could create a compromised film though. Suicide Squad is a prime example of how a studio shouldn't handle things in a kneejerk fashion.

The symbiote effects will need a good amount of cgi no doubt but with worldwide box office coming more into play nowadays, I think this is a risk worth taking for Sony to get the most out of the Spiderman franchise (can do even moreso now that able utilize classic variation of spiderman in his own films without trying to homogenize it in with spinoffs).

I for one hope this and the potential Sable (well blackcat/sable) movie are successful. I think this viewpoint makes sense if one is a fan of quality entertainment.

Well, as far as DC goes, I think it's just those three as far as actors who have done Marvel specific roles, but not limited to that, since they did bring back Nicole Kidman for Aquaman.

Here's my crappy 'shop job...

I really hope this flops. Sony is so stupid that in the first ssign of success they age gonna force multiple characters and storylines in ths sequel and greenlight spinoffs for 7 years in advance. They are never gonna change.

Spider-man doesn't work in an r-rated enviroment. Venom and Carnage might but Sony pulling Spidey out of the MCU which fans have been asking to join for years and putting him an r-rated universe is extremely stupid and a disservice to the character. he isn't Wolverine or DD.

They're not pulling Spider-Man out of anywhere as far as we know.

That's what I'm a bit worried about. It might succeed as a standalone movie. It might be good and make plenty of money. But if it does, Sony might pull Spidey out of the MCU and put him in a darker, grittier "Sony's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe", which will likely not have the same success as the one standalone Venom movie and also rob all of the characters from the two studios of interaction with eachother. From the comments by Amy Pascal I'm worried Sony thinks this MCU connection thing is only an investment for a temporary brand perception boost.

True, Hardy's on board for now, but maybe he gets nervous about the direction it's taking, ala Suicide Squad, and drops out.

Or folks would prefer he drop out since they'd just prefer Venom be in the MCU. I mean, call a spade a spade, guys. If the film's successful, what's the issue? Not like Venom is coming up next as potential foes for Holland's Spider-Man.

The issue is that the Spidey deal will expire after his fifth MCU appearance in 2019. If the Venom film is successful it is very likely Sony will move Peter out of the MCU and into the Avi-verse to fight Tom Hardy and 5 or so of his colleagues.

if Sony pulls Spider-man out of the MCU, fans will never forgive them. They will crucify them. They have been asking this for years and since we are talking about a r-rated universe they will need all the financial help they can get.

I know i will never forgive them and i will actively boycott every Sony movie (not that they have plenty of good ones coming...)

I don't think Sony would be all that worried about a handful of online Spider-Man fans giving them crap online or not seeing their films anymore than Marvel probably didn't pay mind to people who were upset about Heimdall being played by Idris Elba in Thor. Crucify? That's an exaggeration. What, so the whole of Sony is going to be taken down because of some pissed off Spider-Man fans who are not the general audience?
