VH1'S 100 Greatest Artists of All Time

First of all..."great" would assume some level of talent. If that is the case, then certainly Dream Theater is one of the greatest acts on earth (and Rush would certainly be higher than number 75). Greatness can also come from just having amazing songs (like The Beatles, not necessarily overly talented musically, but they wrote the greatest songs ever written). What should NOT be taken into consideration are sales numbers. Trends come and go, and often come as a reaction against skillful playing.

Exactly, if DT or Pain Of Salvation or Rush are not on the list then it's invalid.

I agree. People had the nerve to wonder why Celine Dion wasn't on the list and I'm like, yes she is a terrific singer but she doesn't even write her own material. Same as Whitney Houston. People look at them and assume they deserve to be on there because of singing alone, and that's not the case.

how the hell did coldplay get on this list and ahead of rush janis joplin and lynyrd skynyrd at that?

#1 is right without a shadow of a doubt but yea. Rush @ 75, no DT, no Yes = joke of a list.

Also note the PCness of the top ten. 5 white artists, 5 black, no women and we know what John Lennon said about woman's place in the world. Janis Joplin not being top 15=joke. Aretha Franklin not being higher than 27, also a joke and Madonna being ahead of both of them is disgusting. Still, just by having Rush, KISS and Journey on it it reflects people's tastes way more than a Rolling Stone magazine list ever could, as Jann Wenner is a snob and a gigantic *****e.

I can see Nirvana being included in the top 100 but top 20 is rediculous when you put REM in the 70s

I could argue with the rankings as far as who should be higher or lower all day, and it is really just my personal opinion.

Also personal opinion...Nirvana should not even be on the list. They are the most over-rated band in the history of rock n roll. They were hardly original or ground breaking, as that style had been around for quite some time...and their songs were mostly poorly performed, badly written crap.

You know instead of Nirvana, they really should have listed the band they made a career stealing riffs from, The Pixies. The lack of the Pixies on the list when a number of others on this list either sing their praises or list them as a major influence is officially rediculous.

Also as others have said, if this is of all time, then this list definitely needs some Sinatra.

I agree with most of it....the top 10 is debatable, I would move some up and some down

Madonna being ahead of both of them is disgusting.

This list is based on a poll answered by 200 musicians. Madonna being high on the list makes sense because she's the Queen of Pop. She influenced every single female pop singer in the last 25 years. They're all gonna vote for her. If this list was based on the opinion of people off the street, then yeah, it'll be different. But it isn't.

VH1 originally did this list in 1998. So, chances are, they'll do it again in 10 years. Jack White, Lady Gaga, and other contemporary artists will likely be on it.

they asked actual performers/musicians....there was no fan voting here, so I respect it more than most

Beyonce is way too high. Way, way, way too high.
