WAR OF KINGS #6 (of 6)

Written by DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING
Penciled by PAUL PELLETIER
Cover by BRANDON PETERSON
Variant Cover by ADI GRANOV

This is it – the big fight for all the cosmic marbles! Shi'Ar vs. Inhuman! Black Bolt vs. Vulcan! Who will rule? The fate of two intergalactic civilizations teeters on the brink, and the outcome of this conflict will send shockwaves throughout the Marvel Universe! Don’t miss the climactic chapter in what IGN.com calls: "Action-packed but intimate and character driven…this could very well be the textbook definition of how to execute major superhero storylines."

Vulcan pwned Adam Warlock in the most ridiculous way ever. He absorbed his magic b/c it was "just energy". At this rate, he should just absorb Blackbolt's screams :whatever:

sooo....does that mean scott and alex can absorb adam warlock too?

Meanwhile, Black Bolt discovers that the Inhumans are not quite the happy family he thought they were! It’s explosive action and universe-changing twists from the DnA/Pelletier War Of Kings team that IGN.com calls "a versatile dream for science fiction and fantasy fans...event comics done right!"

Really really like reading Saint-Seiya, the armor part.

Kudos to Abnett and Lanning. Crystal's finally being written as if she's grown up.

this book is very political...as most wars are...was that DarkHawk protecting Vulcan? and when did he get so strong?

The Universe is about to change forever in what IGN.com calls "a veritable dream for science fiction/fantasy fans…War of Kings is event comics done right."

Gladiator looks piiiiiiiiiiisssssed!

Well, he was serving Lilandra in more than one way. One suspects he loved her. I'd be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssssssssseed too.

I want to see rachel just kick some ones ass and do something

Much of the focus at Marvel's convention panels this weekend has involved Dark Reign: The List and other major upcoming storylines. However, one major event storyline is still very much in progress and moving towards a hug climax. That storyline is War of Kings, the latest Cosmic Marvel epic from the minds of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

The fourth of six issues recently shipped to stores. It featured, among other things, the assassination of the deposed Empress Lilandra and the escalation of the war between Black Bolt and Vulcan. With only two issues left, it appears fans won't have long to wait for the epic brawl between these two kings. But one of the announcements this weekend involved the revelation that War of Kings is about to get a little longer.

The series will now be capped off by an epilogue issue called War of Kings: Who Will Rule? With the space dust from issue #6 still settling, the surviving powers in the galaxy must now pick up the pieces and crown a single king. Who Will Rule can be viewed as the cosmic equivalent of Civil War: The Confession structurally, if not necessarily thematically.

Naturally, Abnett, Lanning, and the entire War of Kings creative team will be handling this epilogue issue. We talked with the duo (who are collectively abbreviated as DnA) and their editor, Bill Rosemann, about the genesis of Who Will Rule?, what readers can expect in the final issues of War of Kings, and the possibility of a new ongoing series debuting in the series' aftermath.

IGN Comics: How should readers look at Who Will Rule? Is it the equivalent of Civil War: The Confession for this particular event?

Bill Rosemann:
With War of Kings #6 filled to the brim with all-out action and jaw-dropping developments, War of Kings: Who Will Rule? is the readers chance to see who is left standing - and what side they're standing on - when all the smoke clears. It both reveals the reverberations from the finale and also points the way to what is coming next for their favorite cosmic characters.

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning: We had planned to include an epilogue in the series as was done with Annihilation and Conquest but the scope of the fallout from the conclusion of the final issue was so vast we asked Bill if there was a chance we could extend this into another issue rather than have to cram everything into the last 4 pages of the issue #6. Marvel very kindly gave us the extra issue and this offered us the chance to fully explore the ramifications and consequences for the main players in the mini-series in depth and detail. It also gave us an extra 4 pages of awesome action for the climax of issue #6, which was nice!

IGN Comics: Which characters and factions are covered in this story? Do characters like Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy play a role?

DnA:
Who Will Rule? focuses on the main players and factions that have been involved in the mini-series, specifically; the Inhumans, Kree and Shi'Ar and Crystal and Gladiator, our two focal characters and really does centre on the question, 'Who Will Rule?' Nova and the Guardians are caught up in the aftermath of the War in their own titles where events lead them into their next big adventures.

IGN Comics: Both Annihilation events eventually birthed a new ongoing series. Will this epilogue be setting the stage for a new project (or multiple ones) as well?

Rosemann:
As has happened before, new stories will grow out of War of Kings -- and we'll continue to keep the growth focused, organic, and of the highest quality. As for what they might be, stay tuned!

DnA: The really cool thing with the cosmic titles at the moment is that we get to play with characters that haven't been given much screen time of late and show how awesome they are again. Each 'event' so far has a character or characters that have emerged to their own titles, Nova and Guardians respectively, War of Kings has given us an even larger cast of classic Marvel characters to explore and develop. Given the chance, we are more than happy to continue to do this in whatever format is available. Like Bill says, stay tuned!

IGN Comics: Regardless of which side wins this war, what state will the galaxy be in at the conclusion? Are Adam Warlock's fears coming closer to fruition?

Rosemann:
Cosmic fans will want to check out Guardians of the Galaxy #15 for a very interesting -- and frightening -- vision that Crystal experiences. Will it come true? Will Adam Warlock's warning and Star-Lords greatest fear actually come to fruition? Will this latest cosmic calamity cripple the universe? Our fate lies in the hands of Vulcan and Black Bolt!

DnA: From the outset we wanted this series to have a lasting and profound effect on the Marvel Cosmic Universe. We didn't want to simply reset the clock back to where things were before the war occurred. Bill and Marvel have supported our plans wholeheartedly so that we can truly say that following the conclusion of War of Kings the cosmic landscape; geographical, political and personal, will be forever altered.

IGN Comics: We don't know which ruler will be crowned king, but it's looking like we know of one who won't... How severely will Lilandra's death affect the remaining issues of War of Kings? Will her absence affect the Shi'ar or Kree cause more?

Rosemann:
The shocking assassination of Lilandra will immediately place both rulers on a collision course that will play out in the most shocking manner in War of Kings #5 and #6. We're locked into our finale with no looking back!

DnA: Lilandra's assassination is pivotal, up until now Black Bolt has been staying his hand, refraining from an all out offensive in the hope that Lilandra's mission would succeed and the war would end diplomatically. With Lilandra's death, that restraint is gone and we will see the vengeful, single-minded Black Bolt that decimated the remains of the Skrull Invasion fleet come to the fore once again.

For Vulcan, her death makes things more difficult rather than simply removing a potential threat, her murder has galvanised her supporters and his detractors and the Shi'Ar homeworld is split in open revolt with it's emperor on the other side of the galaxy prosecuting an increasingly unpopular and costly war. Vulcan knows he must end things swiftly or risk loosing the crown for good.

IGN Comics: What can you tease regarding the final few months of War of Kings? In particular, how will Gladiator and the resistance respond to the attack on Lilandra?

Rosemann:
Lilandra's death will bring the Shi'Ar and their allies to their lowest point yet. But it is often from the depths that heroes rise.

DnA: Like Bill says, it puts our heroes at their lowest ebb. Gladiator in particular has seen his desperate actions turn to ashes. He has betrayed all he believed to support Lilandra in the hope that it will ultimately save the Empire he has served all his life. Now she is dead, he is lost; branded a traitor, the last real chance to end the war gone, the throne world in flames and all on his watch and as a result of his actions. Now we will really get to see the measure of hero and the man.

IGN Comics: Anything else you guys want to add regarding the cosmic Marvel 'verse?

Rosemann:
I want to personally thank every reader that has come along for the ride and placed their trust in Dan, Andy, Paul and the rest of the WoK crew to deliver a shock-filled, emotionally rich story. According to readers and reviewers' reactions, the team hasn't disappointed yet, and after reading the script to issue #6, and watching Paul deliver the final pages day after day, I can confidently say that they will deliver an incredibly intense finale.

So if you continue to enjoy Nova, Guardians and WoK: Ascension, and keep spreading the word in comic shops and on message boards, then we'll do all that we can to continue the healthy expansion of Cosmic Marvel.

DnA: We can only echo Bill's words of thanks to the readers who have supported the stories we've been telling in our little cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe. From Annihilation, thru Conquest and now with War of Kings, we've been given the opportunity to tell stories about some of our favourite Marvel heroes and have got to work with some great and talented artists and writers and editors. War of Kings is a culmination of the stories we started three years ago in Annihilation and has let us alter the cosmic landscape forever.

The fact we can keep mixing things up and make sweeping changes is what is making the cosmic titles so exciting and vibrant. Quite literally anything can happen, and often does! Just when you think things are settling down we are able to throw everything up in the air again and this sense that anything goes is a great opportunity for truly exciting stories that have an edge of unpredictable danger to them; anyone could die, everything can and does change! We hope that moving forward more people will join us for what is proving to be a fun-filled and thrilling cosmic roller coaster ride!!

So is Lilandra really dead? Going by Darkhawk, Darkhawk's armor killed Lilandra while taking control of it.
