I didn't say it was the only change (and I have never said, in all my posts here, that it was the only option), I said it was the only thing gone. Which, granted, isn't 100% accurate but, IMO, it's the only major aspect of his character that has been eliminated.
I don't consider Harry's death or how Pete interacts with other heroes and villains as fundamental parts of the character's history. They're part of his past, sure, but (just as an example) I don't think whether Harry lived or died 15 years ago has radically altered the Spider-Man character. And I'm still waiting to see "New Ways to Die" before crying foul on Pete's relationships with Norman, Venom, etc.
