watch the golden compass go to hell

It's funny if a movie promotes Christain beliefs like the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, it's a great movie everyone should see. If it doesn't every copy needs to be destroyed and never be shown to the public. I wonder what Movies2k4 opinion on this issue is.

too extreme.

Sure.

Just don't expect quiet acceptance of what can be seen as an irrational attack.

In this case,... too many have read the books so they know the underlying point of the upcoming trilogy.

I find it amusing that straight "fiction" of all genre can be accepted in our society no matter how gory,... but any fiction that impacts religious beliefs or sexual mores can't really be tolerated.

I saw the movie and found parts of it "heavy-handed" in that there were NO good members of the Magis-whatsis.

They were all obviously evil or mindless puppets or worse of all,../ convient targets.

Also having the main characters be as unscrupled as they were protrayed also rubbed me the wrong way.

The reasons were "weak" as far as why her parents didn't let her know they were her parents,...

The problem I see with all of that, though, is that nearly ANYTHING can be rationalized as an attack (warranted or not) if someone really wants to believe that's what it is. Where does it end? And I haven't seen the film or read the books, so I can't comment on either of them. I'm just tired of this society we live in where absolutely everything has to have some sort of agenda, real or imagined. It's gotten ridiculous.

But while most can suspend belief and just enjoy a film that doesn't hit "too close" to their core beliefs - Everyone has something they can't ignore.

I would say that the ORIGINAL premise and base purpose of the books were agenda driven.

It bleeds over into the movie.

Those christians boycotting the film because they have issue with all the religious characters as being in some way "slimey" are doing this correctly - voting with their wallets - u can't fault them,... just like too many women vote the same way about x-rated porn films.

If you don't like the premise - Don't go.

If you do it correctly,.. and people don't know your true feelings,.. you can be two faced enough to put forth your agenda in a way that comes off as innocent.

Gene roddenberry is/was a great example of that.

C'mon,... is there really any doubt that the original author wasn't attacking organized religion?

I saw it. It was a pretty good movie with some very interesting and intriguing notions. Even though I am a practicing person of faith I think that organized religion deserves to be attacked.

Much of the blatant christianity/religious bashing was taken out to make the movie more marketable.

The plan was to include the hardcore bashing in the sequel but with the way this movie is tanking at the box office there will be no sequel.

The atheists had one shot with this movie to seriously bash organized religion but blew it.

I guess there is a G-d.

But a lot of people don't just vote with their dollars. They vehemently decry whatever it is in the media that doesn't agree with their beliefs and try to get it taken off the market or censored. I take issue with that. Disagreeing with something is one thing; trying to silence it simply because you don't agree with it is another entirely.

I guess there is a G-d.
Mmm, maybe he should decide to care about Black people and cure all the innocent children with AIDS in Africa instead of wasting time sabotaging movies. :)

Anyway, I'm reminded of something I've noticed.
I'm a concierge, but that's with a " /Security" at the end...so I have to deal with street psychos and drug addicts, etc.

Every single day, you will get schizophrenic people, or people who are simply cranky weirdos, yelling at the sky, talking to themselves, but I've had a few really mentally ill people, who are sitting out there having a conversation with no one.

Occasionally I'll get so fed up and un-sympathetic, that I'll just walk up politely, EXTRA-politely, and simply ask, "Who are you talking to? :)"

And, They, Flip. The. F***. out.
RAGE explosion.
And it seems that they instantly become so defensive, and feel so attacked, and become so violently opposed to my simple, harmless, honest question.......because it threatens their whole delusional fantasy world-view.
Everything within their coping mechanism depends fully on believing it no matter what, and they can not allow it to even be questioned, because having to deal with reality would just be devastating for these poor, weak, scared, sick people.

Yeah, this story reminds me of that phenomenon.

Um...Wil.....who are you talking to? :extra-polite:

Thats a great analogy. I myself like to listen and take criticism under consideration to see if its warranty.

I'm not so self centered to believe that everything I know, believe and do is always correct.

I mean don't people realize that because we are so close to our perceptions that its possible that we may not see that some of them could be wrong.

Sorry, not intentional. Let me rephrase, "Hollywood had had one shot with this movie to seriously undermine organized religion but blew it.

Is that better atheist? :woot:

And those are the idiots I don't associate with. The ones who scream censorship,........................ on both sides of the religious issue.
On my "side" the fools who need to judge what follows Gods word within man's world,.. and on the other side those who judge all who follow the christ as much less than they actually are.

My list on what I'd like to silence in todays world is a pretty short one,... Starting with that nonsense that it's okay for full grown men to sex little boys, for example.

This movie would be about 250th on a list I'd title " with nothing else to do - what would I stifle?"

Nothing to really add to that but  .

hopefully they'll get the memo. rebelling against the one that actually created you isn't the way to go. killing God even if it's just a fictional story is a Prima Facia "NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Sorry that's the Truth and I hope this movie doesn't get a sequel.

hopefully they'll get the memo.
Well, they won't be getting one from your God.

rebelling against the one that actually created you isn't the way to go.
Then why do you keep doing it?

Could you explain what you mean by this? ^

Yeah but the author who "killed God" in the novel doesn't believe in him so he wouldn't feel he is rebelling against a being he doesn't accept.

Hmm... How'd I let this one slip away. I'm not going to see the movie. The man has openly professed that he wants to undermine christianity. That's his goal, his life, not my business. But I don't need to fund him. I live in a highly christian area, and I have told several people who had shocked reactions. I don't intend to boycott the theatre, but to... I don't know.

You know, I wouldn't give a ****, I'd still see the flick, if he were just atheist or agnostic. But to try to actively undermine christianity... I can't support that.

What's sad is I was looking forward to seeing the movie before I heard that news. I had read the book and never really grasped that it was so anti-religion (sue me, I want escapism not commentary)

I can understand why you would feel this way but I went to see because I was curious about the methodology of undermining organized religion.

If you really feel the way you do about this, you should want to know how your enemies are coming at you so you can not only protect yourself but to also respond accordingly.

I see what your saying: Know what you don't believe. And like I said, I've read the book. If I can catch it at the library in town when it goes on DVD, I will, but I'm not going to spend money to see it. I don't want to fund his intent.

I don't wish violence upon him. I don't want to burn his books. I just don't want to give him any more of my money.

Haven't we had this discussion before Wilhelm? Didn't you at one point in your life believe in the One True God? Answer that truthfully.
