Watchmen, early Oscar buzz?

There's a hypothetical version of WATCHMEN that could have been up for a lot of Oscars, but not this one. This one seems a bit too mired in pulp to really catch Academy attention (and I don't mean that as a slight against the film, just a statement of how things work). It's not WATCHMEN as envisioned by Stanley Kubrick.

That said, I do wonder if WATCHMEN would be more likely to garner such nominations if the 3 hour, 10 minute cut was the one being released in theaters. I don't think it would necessarily effect the Box Office in a positive way, but maybe it would be a bigger critical smash.

I only see Techinal nominations for it, like Visual effects, Sound, Costume, Set design, and maybe JEH for supporting actor.

Art Direction
Sound Mixing
Costumes
Maybe Cinematography (Highly, highly unlikely)

Those are the only possible nominations. Maybe Makeup, but I really don't see why it would get makeup. It has pretty much no chance at Visual Effects seeing as Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation, and Avatar (I hear it's groundbreaking, but I know absolutely nothing about it) are coming out among others.

I'd like to see JEH get nominated for Supporting, but that isn't happening.

Chances are that it will be nominated for nothing at all since it's coming out in the beginning of March.

JEH or JDM nominated for supporting actor would be amazing...but prolly would never happen

As we learned with Heath, the academy will respect amazing acting regardless of the genre of film. So if we're lucky JEH may get nominated!

I don't think that the performance itself will be good enough for an Oscar (Not a knock on JEH, Just saying).

The latter happened to Zodiac in 2007.

A good number of renowned reviewers were calling an Oscar nom for Heath when TDK was released. (People were skeptical since that was way back in July, but the Oscar bait field just kept on clearing, so by December it was pretty much a done deal.) I haven't seen anything of the sort for JEH, even though he's a perfect Rorschach from what we've seen.

Plus his face is covered for most of the movie, which makes it harder to get recognized for any acting awards. Heath was slathered in makeup, but at least you could see his eyes and mouth.

Get real... Do you reaaaaaaly think the Academy will remember Watchmen in a year from now? Most of the times they ignore the films older than 6 months. I must see the movie first, but at this hour I dont see any oscar material in this adaptation. Hope to be wrong, seriously...

Thats somewhat of a generalization. In the most recent Oscars, TDK was released in July, Iron Man in May, Wanted in June, and The Visitor in April. All of them were nominated for at least one Oscar.

I don't think Watchmen will be nominated in any upper-tier catagories (even though I have said I would love to see a supporting-actor nomination for JEH), but I think it has at least a small chance to get nominations for some of the technical awards (visual effects, costumes, maybe make-up, and cinematography).

that is true, the real oscar contender come out in the fall/winter, and plus the nominees that were nominated this were from fall or winter. Plus JEH is a veteran of hollywood and he was nominated for a Oscar.

In respect to the big-name awards, that's hardly the case. With a couple exceptions, all of the nominees for said awards were rather close to Oscar season.

it's odd that i've never heard of JEH up until this movie and im going on 19, did the guy take an extended vacation or something?

I thought about Oscars, but I don't think it will get any majoy nominations.

It'll get some technical nominations-- sound mixing, sound editing, make-up, etc.

He played the punk-ass kid who smoked and rode motorcycles in The Bad News Bears, and a pedophile in Little Children.

As a matter of fact he did, he made no films or TV shows between 1993 and 2006.

Screw the Oscars, they are out of touch and rigged (for lack of a better term) to award certain films released at a certain time of year due to the committee's short term nomination memory.

It won't even be mentioned for tech awards.

I still think the early March release killed any real-life Oscar chances, but if the Academy was just, Watchmen would get serious consideration for art direction. The look of the film was just tremendous.

JEH was also a revelation, but the real power of his performance lay in the scenes where he isn't wearing the mask, which was probably less than 10 minutes of screentime.

It damn well better get nominated for Visual Effects. The CGI on Doc Manhattan was incredible. And it has breathtaking cinematography too. Not sure if it will get a nomination for it though.

they are going to re-release it in July (in full 3 hrs. and 30 mins) so its a possiblity that they can get a nod in the oscar race, if anything it would be in the Golden Globes

While the Oscars are a bad joke ('The Reader'? Pathetic.) I do not think 'Watchmen' deserves to be nominated for anything really other than some of the technical awards - and it would be lucky to get those, too.

But if I were a fan of the film, I wouldn't get too hung about any nominations; just be glad you have a film you enjoy. After all, isn't that what it's all about?

If TDK didnt get nominated, no way in hell Watchmen gets nominated for any of the serious awards.

no oscar buzz for this well directed, well directed, well acted and visually beautiful piece of crap movie.

I fell asleep twice and I know 2 others in my party nodded off at least once. I could not stand the graphic novel but wanted to see this movie anyway, mainly due to Snyder dorecting. Good job Snyder but even your skill behind the lens could not salvage the film with such poor source material!

Best CGI nom is possible.

That is exactly what happened to me during the reader.
