EXCLUSIVE: Kaneda Audition Scene For Taika Waititi’s ‘Akira’ May Suggest An R-Rating
CHARACTER #2: Hey, these are duds.

KANEDA: What? No, there they’re not man. Give it some time. They take at least an hour to take full effect.

CHARACTER #2: Bull****! I know these pills they only take ten minutes to release. Five minutes if you “shell” them, which I did.

KANEDA: Ew, that’s gross bro. Too much information.

CHARACTER #2: These are duds, so that means we need to renegotiate.

KANEDA: Fine, sure, we can do that. But right now I got to save my best friend that got himself into a situation with the Vipers. And it’s frustrating because I’m always bailing him out of trouble ever since we were kids. I know what you’re thinking right now, ‘Cut him lose. Forget about it. Focus on our renegotiation’.

But, I can’t bro. Cause at the end of the day, family is family and I love him to death and I can’t let him die.

CHARACTER #2: Will you shut up? You never stop talking.

I wasn’t serious about renegotiating. That was code for ‘I’m going to stab you in the throat’.

KANEDA: Okay, what? You can’t be serious…you are serious. Wow. Okay, that’s impossible for anyone to decipher even myself.

CHARACTER #2: Stop ****ing talking.

KANEDA: The thing about the pill I gave you it actually does take immediate effect, not in the way you wanted or hoped, obviously. But yeah, 65% dramogren or dramoupe. Dude, these names are super confusing. Anyways, enjoy your ride and we can talk later.

I read that audition scene with the same energy like in RoboCop when Clarence is pissed about money.
Clarence Boddicker : ****! I don't believe it!
Bobby : What?
Clarence Boddicker : You... you burnt the ****ing money!
Bobby : I had to blow the door! What do you want?
Clarence Boddicker : It's as good as marked, you *******. You stupid, stupid *******!
Or like these fellas:

Anyway, if it's R, it will be another sign they're committing to it.

The good news is that Sunrise is producing a new anime adaptation of AKIRA, and Katsuhiro Otomo looks to be involved.

So if anything good comes of this, we might get a proper adaptation for the original manga from the original creator.

‘Akira’ Production Put on Hold by Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has put its long-in-development “Akira” adaptation on hold indefinitely, sources tell Variety.

Sources indicate that after a brief delay, the studio has pulled the plug on production indefinitely for the classic anime adaptation, which was set to begin later this fall. “Thor: Ragnarok” helmer Taika Waititi was on board to direct, and the studio hopes when he is done with production on “Thor 4” that the film can get back into production.

Waititi was in the midst of meeting with young Japanese actors for “Akira’s” two lead roles. While the studio originally delayed production to give him time to find the right talent, budget concerns sent the film back into development.

The postponement represents another setback for the “Akira” adaptation, which has spent years of trying to get off the ground, dating back to when Jaume Collet-Serra was set to direct in 2012. Warner Bros. had similar budgetary concerns at the time, and the studio went back to the drawing board. Collet-Sera eventually departed to work on other projects.

When Waititi boarded the film in 2018 after he finished production on Fox Searchlight’s “Jojo Rabbit,” the film looked to be in its best position in years to finally get moving. “Akira” was scheduled to open on May 21, 2021, but it’s now likely to be removed from the schedule.

Just kill this thing. It's not happening.

Total flex move by Disney. Hoping the want doesn't happen with Gunn and SS2

Hemsworth: “Um, my Men in Black franchise is cancelled and my schedule’s free! Come on Marvel!”

I think what's gonna raise a bigger stink is the fact that he was planning on having a pretty large cast of Asian and probably half-Asian.

WB's script concerns probably went like this:

WB Exec: "So, Taika, baby. Quick question-ay. So the lead characters in this film, do they really have to be Japanese?"

Taika: "I mean it's based on a Japanese story. It's set in Japan. It uses Japan as a metaphor for the seedy, grimy underbelly that exists within modernized, superficial utopian societies."

WB Exec: "Great! Love it! I'm with you! But...how about we set it in New York instead?"

Taika: "We agreed on Neo-Tokyo! We agreed on casting Asian leads!"

WB Exec: "Taika. Baby. That was then. This is now. So yeah...can't we just do the good ole...Kaneda-Kenny shuffle? I got it. What if, and just work with me here. What if, Tetsuo was called...TRAVIS?!"

Taika: "Hello, Kevvy. Yeah, it's me, Taika. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sorry. Yeah, it ain't happening bruv. Yeah, so you got some space in ye sched for some fattie Thor?"

WB Exec: "What?! Come on! Come ooon!"

those unknown actors would become known after the movie was out.

Figured it was something like that.

This is why Hollywood contracts confuse me sometimes. How could he just up and abandon Akira if he was contracted for that film?

Disney either bought him out of his WB contract or his Thor Ragnarok contract had an option for a sequel and it precludes any other projects. If the latter is the case and Akira had been in production Thor 4 would have been after Akira.

That's my guess.

I remember hearing something similar happening between JJ and Paramount . JJ was supposed to do star trek 3 and was working on setting up a multipicutre contract with paramount for other original films. He even had a first look contract of some sort with Paramount where his next film was supposed to be offered to paramount before any other studio. Disney offered him star wars 7 and it **** all over Paramount's plans.
