Sci-Fi WB creating live-action Akira - Part 1

2049 wanted to be a franchise starter.

And something tells me they're gonna adapt only part of the manga, because it's rather huge. Or they will remake the animated film and it will be rather underwhelming.

I don't know who cares. But it's a regular topic in every thread.

Some people just wonder what the suits think when they bet large sums on stuff like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and other too weird or high brow material. People bring money to dumb **** like Star Wars, Aquaman, Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious, live action remakes and whatever else mediocrity they puke out every couple of months.

It cracks me up every time when hardcore Anime fans try to mark most of it as "high brow".

For me Akira is like in the same category of John Carter in that much of what they have to show has been seen elsewhere in other properties due to the age of the story. So, I’m just curious how they market this film. I can see how casting can be used to help with that.

You're gonna argue that for understanding Ghost in the Shell or Lain you need more knowledge and to pay attention than for average movie that makes you giggle and chew popcorn?

You damn well know I didn't say that and that wasn't my intention, to put them in the same boat as more mindless films. I'm just saying that most Anime is not as high brow as Anime fans make them out to be. Do you need to keep your brain turned on for some of them? Of course, but their not as high brow as some think.

Can anime not be high brow or something?

I have no idea where you got that from my post.

Hahaha.

I wasn't implying Anime can't or shouldn't be high brow. I guess I've just come across too many hardcore Anime fans over the years that come off pretentious about it. Like being a fan makes you smarter or more high brow as a person I guess you could say.

Perfect Blue is the better Black Swan.

I loved BR2049, but that box office failure lost dozens if not hundreds of jobs. I think it bankrupt one of the financiers, but I don't want to look. I think the same thing will happen to them DUNE flicks. They will most likely be good if not great in the hand of Villeneuve, but make no real profit. I still look forward to them.

Ah I gotcha. I think it's over compensating because of the overall perception of anime by the general public. To prove they aren't just weird cartoon, some diehards go too far in the other direction. I personally see anime as being just as diverse as any other medium. There's more high brow stuff (Banana Fish was amazingly heartbreaking) and then you get stuff like Dragon Ball Super, which I can't tell how seriously that was even taken at this point. Seems almost like self-parody.

... You know what I meant. Read the context of what I was responding to
None of us are that. How much Akira makes doesn't affect us one way or another so why is that cannabalizing this convo. We're consumers. Worry about if you like the movie or not

It matters if you like a movie, and you want more of said movie, or movies of its ilk.

For example, if Star Wars hadn’t done well, it wouldn’t have changed the quality of the movie, but it would have led to a domino effect. We wouldn’t have received The Empire Strikes Back, or even Alien, or Star Trek: The Motion Picture etc.

If Iron Man hadn’t done well, we wouldn’t have the MCU as we know it today.

Eh, with the way people consume media now, even if something bombs at the box office it's not the end of the world. TV, especially these steaming platform, have provided a new arena for projects that would normally be risks theatrically.

It's not that simple. GitS, DB Evolution, Alita all bombed or underperformed that's not stopping WB from moving forward with this. Everything is cyclical. Blade Runner 2049 flopped or underperformed and they're giving just as much money for Dune

And again, please read the context of what was being said and what I said. I said flat out: "It's not like [AKira] is a series that needs to go on and on." So your pomnt about Star Wars, etc. doesn't mean anything in this context

It also results in the people who pay the bills wanting a voice. Look how many films were dumbed down by executive meddling in order to try and make them more palatable. Heck, it even happened to Blade Runner.

The issue is that anime is a medium, not a genre. Much like comics. Anybody that says "anime is like this" is wrong because anime isn't a monolithic thing. Even some common anime tropes are frequently subverted. Pokemon is nothing like The Big O which is nothing like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

You think the studio is making this as a one off? You realize Akira is a manga series with many more subplots that lasted for almost a decade. It’s more than just the 1988 film. So your “context” about it not being a series is wrong.

No idea. Guess it depends on if it takes off.

Really how can you escalate it though? Punching a satellite out of the sky and then what?

The studio almost certainly sees Akira as a potential franchise. Any blockbuster IP is seen a future franchise if it is successful now. Even Inception was viewed as a potential franchise

Yep. I'm no anime snob or expert but it is funny how some folks talk about the medium that is vast with a variety of styles, tones, subject matter, ect as if it is a single thing.

For example Perfect Blue is different from Dragonball Z.
