Torres is Hispanic, and Hispanics can be of any race; she's a Cuban-American woman of mostly West African descent. So, technically, it wouldn't be incorrect to refer to her as black.

Contrary to what you've said, Wonder Woman has traditionally been portrayed as a white character. (I'm not sure how you personally define "white", but southern Europeans aren't really all that different from northern Europeans genetically.)

Keeping the need for diversification in mind, however, I agree that Torres would make for an interesting choice for the role of WW. I don't see her as Hippolyta to Gadot's Wonder Woman, though. The two actresses honestly look nothing alike.
considering WW has been my favorite character for a very long time, I'm well aware that she's portrayed as "white". But she's not really white. She should have some sort of... I don't know, colour to her. And not just be some American girl.

If WW's been portrayed a certain way, as a fictional character, that's essentially what she is. Superman is the same. He's written to be an alien visitor from beyond, and logic will tell you that such a being clearly wouldn't look anything like the way he's depicted in the comic books. It's based on a fantasy, though -- not hardcore science-fiction.

From a purely visual standpoint, Diana of Themyscira is a woman of considerable stature with dark hair, blue eyes, and a skin complexion that ranges from fair to olive. Do such types exist in North America (the US and Canada)? Do such types exist in Latin America? Do such types exist in Europe, the Middle East and parts of North Africa? If you answered "no" to any of those questions, then you're wrong. The reality is that people from all parts of the world (including American whites, like Jaimie Alexander and Jennifer Connelly) satisfy the physical requirement for the role of Wonder Woman.

You should also know that we Americans are not some homogenous group; regardless of race or appearance, we all descend from immigrants. So, in suggesting someone like Gina Torres, and then, conversely, saying that an "American girl" shouldn't have the part, you're ignoring the fact that she, too, is an American. Even worse, whether you realize it or not, by using such language, you're sending a harmful message to non-white Americans that they are somehow unequal to or less American than whatever your perception of a typical American may be.

as far as the looks are concerned, it'll depend on what her origin is. if it's clay then, that's not really an issue. if zeus is her daddy then, you cast someone who looks more like gal, since i don't think he'd play as much a part in a ww film as hyppolita, who should be a priority. i think torres is way too awesome to get over looked for this part though.

a scene like in the intro to the animated film where hypolita is the ww, would be a amazing with her.

:whatever: Whatever. No need to pull out all of these examples. I'm well aware of how she looks and is usually depicted.
My bad for not wording it correctly, though I'm sure most people got what I was saying.

I apologize for wording it incorrectly. Basically what I was saying is that I'm glad that they didnt cast a generic, pale ''white'' girl for the role. They got someone with a little color. And in turn, I think Torres can work well as the mother or could have worked as Diana.
They don't have to look alike, Hipploya is sometimes blonde and doesn't resemble Diana much. I guess it depends what origin they go with.
Anyway, we have our Wonder Woman. End of discussion.

Another solid choice, PF. In my opinion, both Kanakaredes and Marceau would make ideal candidates for the role. I think I'd probably even take them over Bellucci.

My first thought's when Holly Hunter was cast was that she would be playing Queen Hippolyta. I don't know why but I get a feeling she will be.

Someone in another thread mentioned Maggie Sawyer as a potential character and I can see that too.

And here's another possible casting choice for Queen Hippolyta:

Connie Nielsen
Age: 48
Height: 5' 10"
Danish actress whose most notable credits in 'Gladiator' and 'The Devil's Advocate' and this year's '3 Days to Kill'

Man Torres would have been a great WW back in the day. That's actually a pretty cool version of the costume as well.

I also thought of Holly's casting as being Queen Hippolyta when I heard the initial announcement. And while she may not 'fit' perfectly with any incarnation we are familiar with, I still felt that she could bring a stylistic gravitas to the role!

Nonetheless, while it's not meant to be discussed in this forum, I can see Holly better fitting 2 other DC characters:

Within the Superman universe (as it rightfully should be) Holly could play the character so many have speculated:
Captain Maggie Sawyer, Metropolis Police Department

I on the other hand would love to see the Wonder Woman universe become more populated by seasoned actors and have Holly play:
Hera, the Queen of the Gods

^^^ Wow. I never thought of this. Hera!!!!!!! But nice!!! Another great choice.

Another Queen Hippolyta for consideration:

Catherine Bell
Age: 45
Height: 5' 10"
British born, American actress of Scottish and Iranian parents. She is most widely known for her starring television roles on 'JAG' and 'Army Wives'

I could see the role being a Miranda Tate thing. She's playing someone with a made up name, only for things to do a 180 and we're presented with her being Hippoloyta.

Why would the Queen of the Amazon's pretend she's someone else?.

Great choice  I remember seeing her on a magazine cover at a store and the first thing that came to mind was like "She look like she could pass to be WW's mother", Just the more I think of it, the more I see it.

Every poster seem to have a new suggestion for the character. Why?
Aren't Zeta-Jones or Connelly good enough?

Since the Amazons dont age, shouldnt Hippolyta look like she's somewhere in her 30ies?
