I loved Lithgow in Footloose. That was a character that could have just been played as stereotype (strict preacher won't let the kids have a senior prom), but he was really a good guy. You felt bad for him, in reality he was hiding behind an old rule because he was hurting from losing his son and didn't want to see another accident. It was really a great role, and he did a great job with it.
I got to see him on Broadway once, playing the Steve Martin role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. He was awesome. The cast recording has a spoiler alert: it's a recording of Lithgow warning everyone that the next song gives away the twist at the end, so if they haven't already seen the show to stop there and order tickets.
He also says that if the listener has already seen the show, play on and order tickets to see it again. "Preferably at full price. I have children in college. And a mortgage. And I'm a bit of a clothes horse. Thank you."
