What are your complaints? What would you do differently? *SPOILERS* - Part 1

I am as big a Superman as any, but I think you will find when the dust settles from Zack Snyder's mindless destruction of Metropolis, that this film has more faults and bad points than it has good....

A 6 out of 10 from me, and I am being so generous because I love Superman.

That's your opinion, we all clearly don't feel that way

I kind of agree with him.

But man those action scenes, damn. Almost makes up for the train wreck that was the first half of the movie.

I tend to agree as well. The problem is the film never manages to get the balance of story and spectacle correct. On it's own the final act of the movie is almost a short film in its own right, honestly I could see myself fast forwarding through a large chunk of the movie if I get it on DVD.

Lois not being a damsel in distress and actually helping Supes isn't new.

Maybe in the films, but that's definitely a part of the character I love, and I'm glad she was given a more active role.

But it's how that role played out, and how boring her dialogue was while doing it.

The sass she usually has, the stubborness, the passion she has for journalism... It all just dissappeared half way through the film.

And it wouldn't have taken much.

Like a defiant comment to faora when she's putting the breather on her.

Or a line like 'if I get through this, this is going to make one hell of a story' when she's flying into metropolis on the plane with the military.

Anything to show me this is still Lois Lane.

But they just didn't bother.

I thought she made a decision to stop writing about Clark after she spoke to him in the grave yard out of respect. The story didn't call for her to be the stubborn reporter after she dropped pursuit of the story.

When Faora asked for Lois and Hardy refused, Lois decided to speak for herself and went in the ship. I mean her stubbornness might not be as aggressive but it's there.

I don't think so. That's what happened with Superman Returns. MOS will have an opposite effect. Much like Scarface.

I feel the same exact way.

If I got this thing on DVD, I'd probably only watch the Krypton scene, Clark as a bartender, the handcuffed Superman scene, and the whole sequence when Superman/Lois are on the spaceship.

And maybe Superman killing Zod.

I would watch all the Krypton scenes, then fast forward from there to the scout ship scene with Clark/Jor-El, then fast forward to Superman getting it on with Zod and Company in Smallville to the end of the movie.

Zod never truly wanted to kill anyone... i mean, not for killing's sake...

I am not sure he grew stronger, and if he did, it definitely not his control.. it's the exposure to the sun... he was forcing supe's hands... if he had wanted to kill supe, he wouldn't have threatened the family at the end.. he'll still be fighting... he was in a chokehold position.. and he knew if he continues to threaten supe, he is leaving no choice in the matter...
In the end he wanted to kill Superman, and the humans. It was never what he wanted in the first place but when all that was gone he had nothing but hate and vengeance left.

Yes, his increase in power was of course due to the sun but he reveled in it. The way he really embraced it during the latter parts of their fight did not at all indicate that he wanted Superman to kill him, it seemed like he truly wanted to kill Superman. The end scene is so hard to analyze since they put powers into plot convenience again. Supes had Zod in a choke hold, but no matter what they did to each other before they were flying around all over the place because they are so strong. Then it's also the fact that Superman can't stop Zod from turning his gaze on the humans, but he is strong enough to break his neck. That makes it hard to judge the intentions of the characters, it just becomes the intention of the writer to force Superman to kill him.

But at this stage in his career he's going to make mistakes he can't be a 100% perfect from the word go like he was in the Donner film.
Previous incarnations (the ones I've experienced) have had him "perfect" due to how he was raised.

In this version he's not raised like that though. His father instead thinks it's better that people die than to risk exposing Clark. Clark apparently disagrees already as a child and risks everything to save those kids. Given some later actions the character actually seems to devolve from his sense of good to some degree, although he's of course still clearly a good person.

Very good assessment. This was another BIG problem with the script.

Same here. I want to like this movie as a whole so bad, but just can't. It's sad

I think one of the reasons I don't outright dislike the film is because of how much potential the sequel has. Oh, and because of Henry Cavill. I'll never be able to express how perfect I thought he was.

Martha kent basically telling Lois, ”yup my son is superman”.

lois getting shot by that kryptonian laser and only getting a flesh wound. the laser could kill kryptonians, but not humans?

I saw it differently though... To me, he was only 'threatening to kill everyone' to force Supe's hands into killing him or see everyone dies... The are genetically engineered beings - basically doing what they are programmed to do... doing something else like 'vengeance' would be outside their programming. Clark on the other hand had a 'choice' as his father said, because he was naturally born..

Maybe someone can ask goyer what his intention was at the end...:oldrazz:

It wasn't a full blown blast as far as i can see.. it was more of a 'jab'.. maybe to disarm, instead of to kill...

But yeah, you can't kill off Superman's woman.. :woot:

I LIKE MOS, but will only LOVE it if the sequel's amazing :hehe:

repost:

1.PS I remember another thing. Why did the Kryptonians have time to banish (save) Zod and his gang (criminals) yet stood idle as they all died as the planet exploded?? Their last moments are to save the criminals and die themselves? O-kay...
2.How soon after they put Zod in the Phantom Zone did Krypton explode? Did they not know it would release them? Did they really just waste their time putting Zod and his people away only to explode the next minute, releasing Zod and friends?

3.PPS now that I think about it, Metropolis was destroyed yet Clark comes to work at the end of the movie at the DP as if nothing happened to the city? I don't remember but did it look damaged or did it look perfectly fine?

1. The council didnt know/beleive jor el about kryptons doom
2.i think it was the same day that
they were banished.
3. I agree with that. Perhaps it was weeks if not months after the attack that clark got the job. I do wish they did a better job of that..

1. The council didnt know/beleive jor el about kryptons doom

They definitely knew. I think they believed him, too. The issue, I think, was that no one knew when exactly the planet was going to explode.

1. They didn't believe before, but they believed after that because they asked 'so what can we do now' of Jor El... So, they knew it was going to explode.. just not exactly when..

2. If it was indeed same day (not saying that it is), it would really be another plot hole.. the coincidences are just too much... Jor El plans to have his baby shipped off, and it was born on the day the planet explodes.. hahahahahhahahhahah... and then the revolution by Zod also happens on that exact same day... and the council sends them to the phantom zone on that day... holy molly... (note: goyer needs to enroll himself into a 'critical thinking' class)

3. Did they show the DP falling? Not sure about that even though I have seen it 3 times... but think about this, China is building the world's tallest building 220 stories, that can support a small city (30,000 people), in 90 days... so, if they employed the Chinese do do cleanup, the entire Metropolis could be rebuilt in 1 year.. :yay:

Id assume the dp would have falken considering how close it was to black zero and the fact that a building just a few doors down was falling close to it(if not on it)
And yes i agree about goyer

With regards to 1.
I think that the point was that the council may or may not have believed Jor but they didnt act. They were bureaucrats.
That was the point of Zods anger and belief that some bloodlines should be scrapped. The council just talked and took no action. They, just like Zod were bound by what they were bred for.
And Jor-El was just getting through to them when Zod attacked.. he was finally inspiring them to let him act, you could see that was where it was heading.. then BOOM.

as for the time frames.. yeah it was a mess.
and i still dont get sentencing Zod and having a trial in what seemed like MOMENTS before the planet exploded. WTF

The one thing i would have done diffrerent would be to have Zods plan to be to invade earth..even then. To protect his race by taking them to a planet that would make them supermen...
then Zod coming to Earth is not Kals fault
you could even suggest JorEl sends Kal here to be our saviour (if you were so inclined).
Or Zod could learn of earth after Kal is sent and then he decides he wants the planet

Right, and your storyline about Zod might work out well too.. right now, there are some inconsistencies.. like how come faora/zod and gang didn't age 33 years? They got out of the phantom zone the moment it exploded... so, about 33 years have passed before they arrived on Earth..

wow. i guess when you have decided to hate a movie, you can complain every dogs and cats.
