What Changed Between Cuts?: Trank vs FOX

If this movie was just to keep the rights, They should have just sticked with the Trank cut and hope for the best.

I suspect it was a matter of internal politics. Not everyone wanted to spend resources on an unprofitable rights grab, so the "Hold FF" faction had to take sufficient measures to mollify other parties that this totally was a profit-earning endeavor, really.

I will disagree about Fox stepping in to ruin a really cool movie. It's clear that Fox stepped in because what Trank shot was 90% unusable, and the test screenings for the rough cuts of what Trank put together were poor. Add to that all the alleged trouble that Trank was causing and this was a case where likely Kinberg had to step in and play adult. Getting fired from Star Wars at the same time only reinforces that point.

The only one thing I can point to that changed, is dropping Victor Domachev and the internet blog stuff, and going back to Victor Von Doom.

I have to disagree with you here. Fox stepped in because they had zero confidence after seeing the negative buzz around the alterations made to Doom and his background. Which after seeing the first two acts of the movie, would have made more sense in the world Trank was building. From there they just made it a pain both in production, and in the editing room. Heck, the reshoots, I wouldn't be surprised if Trank had no creative involvement there. That was all studio garbage there. Lot's of things such as deeper backstories and more F4 working with the government post powers action pieces were cut, which imo was a mistake. Clearly, you are going in and watching two different films. I think if the studio didn't jump in and botch the movie it not only would have been a better paced film, but a much more cohesive film. The ideas Trank brought in were original, and a much needed breath of fresh air for the F4. And left a ton of potential for anyone willing to tackle it for a sequel.

Link/Source/Proof?

The Thing definitely had scenes of him working for the military cut. They're still in the trailers, but apparently gone from the film.

Link/Source/Proof?

It's been online for a couple of days. Large set pieces, I believe 2-3, were ultimately unused and thrown away. Schnepp, who has a source who was working on this film, confirmed it I believe. Plus, there are scenes in the trailers that weren't even here.

Yeah the thing dropping from the plane one is missing... what else? Where's the proof that all the backstory stuff was cut?

Because me and a couple others in the "Reborn" thread are disputing the validity of that.

I can confirm this, it's teased in the first trailer's that the whole team works with the military but ultimately all we see is a bit of The Thing on his own.

Are the first 45 minutes of the film legitimately good or is it just lowered expectations created by all the negative reviews, poor marketing campaign and bad buzz?

Probably more from column B than A. It is the best part of the movie, but it's still full of stilted dialogue and weird tonal shifts. The whole movie is a mess frankly.

I don't think they are good at all. I think it's just that it is different and you can sort of see what Trank was going for with his so-called "vision." Granted, everyone has their own opinions and tastes.

I think its because all these scenes were looked more realistic and "lo-fi" as Kinberg and Trank put it.

It doesn't look like the comic book movies we've been seeing lately, it's decidedly different.

Looks like Josh Trank wanted more action sequences in his version, but Fox said no

Sprinkles of it are in the first trailers. Grimm had more scenes cut, it wouldn't have been a ton but certainly more for those who wanted it.

Campea and the Collider team talk about the cut/unused set pieces that were meant to be apart of this movie earlier today on youtube w/ movie talk at roughly the 4 min mark.

Imo its legitimately a good first 45. That's of focus on Reed (Teller did a terrific job here) and you could tell it was building up to something better than what the final product was.

If the sources that Collider are referring to are true, than it really seems like Fox screwed this one up the most.

So bizarre, this whole damn thing.

I still dont think Trank's version wouldve been that good

Yeah, whayt we're they thinking? Their meddling damaged too much, they should have let Trank do his version and simply get a different vision and director for the sequel.
