Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. What didn't you like?

Again I think the show's premise is it's biggest problem. They probably have very serious limitations.

There's so much you could do with the Marvel universe, but they're probably not allowed to play with anything too serious.

Just imagine what they could have done with carte blanche.

A super soldier protagonist from the World War II days?

They literally have the entire Marvel universe to play with.

They literally have the entire Marvel universe to play with.

They really don't. They can't use the Avengers. They can only reference them. Probably the same with their villains. Both for legal and practical reasons.

X-Men, Spider-man, etc are all off limits for obvious (unrelated) reasons.

So basically, they have the shadows of the Avengers to play with, and possibly some c-list heroes and villains.

What I don't like is that we don't get a Stan Lee cameo each episode *crosses arms and whines like a child*

But in all seriousness I just hope that they have more interactions with the entire team, they seem much more interesting all together rather than split apart in their own little groups imo. Also the Fitz-Simmons thing has sort of annoyed me, however their interactions sort of remind me of my twin and I... maybe that is the reason I sort of get annoyed of them. Anyways everyone was better in episode 2 than in episode 1 so I hope those two grow on me.

Other than that I can appreciate where this show is going. I am looking forward to next week(Graviton!!!), hoping we get more info on all our characters as well. Also I don't see why everyone hates on Skye and Ward... Skye wasn't ever really annoying to me and Ward... well Ward looks exactly like one of my best friends so I can't help but like him.

Oh and I hope that they don't constantly make references to the MCU, they made a lot less in the second episode but they were still there. I believe by episode 5 they should be non-existent unless it literally pertains to the situation, not like some of the stuff we have been hearing.

The constant references to the Marvel movies is starting to get on my nerves. Yes I expected it in the pilot but continuing into the 2nd episode was a mistake.

I have a feeling this will get old really fast especially if they do this for every episode.

When I watched ep2, Coulson mentioning the "Battle of NY" and "Captain America" made me cringe.

Those references are just fine. The show exists in the same universe and Coulson was actually present for some of the stuff that happened in the films and as a SHIELD agent he knows the rest of it. Had aliens invaded New York in our world, people would talk about that a lot because it's normal to do so. If they weren't talking about things that happened in the films people would be *****ing about that, too.

Battle of New York just sounds kind of silly, when you hear it out loud, I think.

Would it sound better if they said, "That time a portal opened over Stark Tower and aliens from the other side of the universe came pouring through and started blowing stuff up" every time they brought it up? You're watching a show set in a science fiction/science fantasy/comic book universe. All of us have seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Picking this particular nit when we've already accepted the parameters of this fictional universe with its Tesseracts, Extremis viruses, Super Soldier formulas, alien technology, Norse gods, HYDRA weapons and the like seems a bit ridiculous at this point.

That or, the attack on / in New York, New York incident, etc.

I admit I'm nitpicking. But this is the nitpick thread.

Then again, I thought the whole alien invasion came out of nowhere, and was poorly written, so... that's me.

The male scientist was being a jerk. Ward was trying to protect him and make sure he was safe. The way he insulted him later was also jerky.

Also, I think they should've mixed new characters with established characters. Ward should be Quartermain. Skye should be Jessica Jones.

Seriously, there's never going to be an ALIAS or PULSE movie.

I was fine with referencing MCu/Battle of NY/or whatever references Coulson said in the premiere. That was the first episode and it was necessary especially its the spin-off show to the Avengers and they have to let the viewers see the connection between this show and the movie. But seriously, they shouldn't do this name dropping for every episode because its over-kill. Thats like referencing Avengers 1 for the entire runtime of Avengers 2.

Except none of the Avengers are on the screen, and this series is riding those movies' coattails.

I mean, it's not like it can stand on its own.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is interconnected. It's not like the X-universe, where events and even characters are forgotten from one film to the next. (Hell, they're ignoring entire movies because it's inconvenient.) The show references the films and is effected by them, just as the characters in the films reference events in other films. For instance, Jane Foster mentions seeing Thor on TV fighting in the Battle of New York in Thor: The Dark World. Tony Stark' traumatic experiences in the battle were central to Iron Man 3. Captain America and the Super Soldier program were an important influence on events in The Incredible Hulk. Those connections and the references that flow from them make the MCU a much richer, more interesting place than it would otherwise be.

If the fact that it's an interconnected universe bothers you, fine. But it's an essential part of the MCU and it isn't going to change anytime soon.

In the next episode, I hope that there is even less referencing to the Avengers and hope that there is a solid plot established. To me, episode 3 is the one that decides whether I will carry on watching.

I'm guessing the only Whedon thing you've seen is Firefly/Serenity?

What gives you that idea? Do you only recognize River Tam as Whedon's only highly irritating, incredibly special female character, while ignoring early-seasons Buffy, Dawn (who filled the void once Buffy became tolerable), and Cordelia on Angel (which I haven't quite seen a lot of, just the first two seasons, but that's enough to get a feel for where that was heading)?

I'm sure they could play with a cast of hundreds from marvel lore.

just think of all the villians from hydra, AIM, Iron Man, Cap, hulk, Avengers...theres enough there for a zillion movies and they could easily get together and come up with ample stuff for the shows.

I dont care what people say...theres no excuse for toning down this series the way it is. Just look at the effects in that new Wonderland show..or SyFy's defiance.

This shouldnt have to feel like a TV show.

Agreed. This show has tons of material it could use. I can't believe someone said its limited on what it could use. There's literally thousands of characters they could use that are not Spiderman or Xmen related.

I wonder how many people Coulson is going to run into with a past like this last time. Given his job, he's bound to run into several people from previous missions. I'm not complaining about this time specifically but I'm already getting the feeling we'll run into more past love/hate interests and people who double cross him or are otherwise inexplicably convienently there to interact with.

So long as they don't all turn out to be devious turncoats with a deeper agenda it shouldn't become an annoyance.

Some of the team interaction is still kind of meh too, and naturally the secret agent-type with Skye. Who didn't see that coming?

And I would bet you that they have a list of characters they can't use. Actually, they probably have a list of the few characters they can use.

Now, could they do better with what little they have? Yeah, probably. Maybe with better, more ambitious writers.

Hi, the name's Thunder.

But yes, they are very likely extremely limited on what they can use. They can't touch the Avengers - aside from references. Maybe a cameo. They probably can't touch any of the villains, or even ones who haven't already appeared, since they're saving those for live-action movies.

And any major non-Avenger character Marvel owns is probably also off limits, since they want to save those for live-action films.

And given their ties to the movie continuity, any ambitious plots probably have to be cleared with the movie people.

So, they're very limited, and you can tell.

I think you are misreading how restrictive Marvel is going to be with their characters. We've already seen Maria Hill and Nick Fury and Franklin Hall is coming this week. I think by the end of the first season we will have also seen these Marvel characters: Bobbi Morse, Agent 13, AIM, Hydra, Batroc the Leaper and probably several others.

I didnt like this 2nd episode at all. Really nothing..not even the meaningless Firy appearence that should have been done for episode 1.

What a minor threat and boring script. SO some ragtag 3rd world soldiers with brand new creases and all fatigues and Kmart Camo T-shirts can walk right out of the jungle and take over a SHIELD staffed crew and response team? And we get an "head bad gal" who looks like she just washed her hair and walked out of a hollywood porn set in some sort of ridiculous video game soldier costume. (becuase she sure as hell didnt look like she walked out of an acting class) Literally, Lisa Anne was cringing at the bad dialogue and her acting.

Has anyone of the writers ever read a SHIELD inspired marvel story?

I believe the writer's are trying to ape Whedon's style too much and its showing
