Hey all,

I was checking out the Superman Homepage site, and came across this page, detailing scenes/ideas that were left out of the final film:

My question is…..WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO ALL THESE GOOD SCENES AND IDEAS????

I mean, you got:

1. Comic Book Intro Sequence:

I remember hearing about this….it was supposed to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. Why didn’t we see it? This would have been a great and time-efficient way to get the audience up-to-speed. Y’know, provide us with the context and backdrop for the story. Would have been more interesting than that brief, lazy blurb we got.

2. Krypton Remains / Supes Encountering Kryptonite Poisoning / Getting Caught in Kryptonite Asteroid Belt:

The Krypton Remains scene notwithstanding, at least a mention of the other plot points could have given a much better explanation for why Superman’s trip took so long.

For example, Superman had every intention to make the trip as short as possible, as he knew of the consequences of a long-term absence. So, under normal circumstances, the trip to Krypton would have taken much less longer.

However, Superman was severely weakened by the intense Kryptonite radiation at the remains. And/or, his ship was severely damaged and veered off course by the Kryptonite Asteroid Belt. IOW, Supes originally intended for a much briefer trip, but he was severely delayed BY CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND HIS CONTROL!

3. Smallville Farm Scenes with Martha:

These sounded like great scenes……where Clark is really questioning his place and purpose in the world. This would have given more character development to Clark, more insight into his conflict and state of mind.

4. Clark Reading Newspapers in Cellar:

Ok, I know we saw pictures of this. Why was this scene taken out? This would have been a much better way for Clark, and us, the audience, to get up to speed on the current state of the world…….to learn what happened while he was away. It would have been much more visually effective than the quick channel surfing scene we got.

5. LEX BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THE KRYPTON STORY:

I was sooooooooo waiting for Spacey to reveal this at the end of the stabbing scene. I mean, it would have just OOZED evilness and badass. Especially with Lex mocking Superman’s naivety and gullibility. And, it would have made for an unexpected end-of-movie plot twist, and would have instantly raised Lex’s status as a villain.

Also, inclusion of this plot point would have placed more of the blame for Superman’s absence on Lex, and less on Superman himself. IOW, it would have helped to make Superman appear less of an irresponsible a**.

Why, oh, Why??!! I mean, THESE WERE ALL GREAT SCENES/IDEAS!!! IMO, they would have helped to explain and flesh out the themes in the movie much better than what we got……..

The Smallville scenes are on the DVD. The Return to Krypton will either be on a Director's Cut or in the Sequel itself.

The intro was apparently changed last minute but I dont know if the original was comic based.

The 'Lex being responsible' thing was never decided to be used. I'm hoping they use Brainiac as the one that drew Kal-El to Krypton instead, it fits better.

For the movie being cut from 3hrs (the intended time when Singer shot it) to 2:30, WB is to blame. They forced him to cut 30 mins out of it last minute when they felt audiences couldnt deal with a 3 hr flick.

So much of what made Superman Returns bad, could have been addressed in those points.

The real Superman never would have left for 5 years, but if it wasn't his fault for the long absence, that would have made sense. Luthor being responsible for Supes leaving also would have aded to the drama.

Unfortunately, chemistry between Superman and Lois was no where so a few plot twists wouldn't have helped. An overall dull story probably wouldn't have been saved by a few tweeks either. However, many of your points might have tipped my favor to a marginal thumbs up.

Really? I have never had read that before. Not saying that it's not true but you could point me to an article or interview where this is said? This is what I found:

Question: Were you a little disappointed that the film has been cut down from its original two hours and 45 minutes?

Singer: No, not at all. I don't desire to have exceedingly long movies. I've never made exceedingly long movies. The first X-Men was 80 minutes or something like that. What happened was, I had this cut and it was time to now sit with an audience and it's what I call a friends and family screening where a number of people sit there, and as I'm watching it, I looked at certain things in it and felt certain things and one of those was really tough because it was a return-to-Krypton sequence, a whole sequence in space, very expensive, elaborate sequence but in the context of this movie, it just didn't it just wasn't necessary and it wasn't important and afterwards it could live in some other dimension, somewhere we could show it.

But super-bats, even with the addition of all these scenes it wouldn't change the fact that Jason is still in the movie which seems to be the thing that ruined the movie the most for you.

They went down it.

They were cut for time. With all of the scenes they shot the movie would have been over three hours. The Krypton scene was cut because it would have been about 10 minutes with no dialogue.

You know what? I agree. Except for the comic book intro. This was done in Donner's Superman: The Movie and it would've just gave fans who don't like the movie another reason to moan.

They were cut for time. With all of the scenes they shot the movie would have been over three hours. The Krypton scene was cut because it would have been about 10 minutes with no dialogue.
I still think the scenes should've stayed in. If people could stand three Lord Of The Rings movies that were three hours each, then they could've payed attention to Superman.

Singer screened the film only to his friends and family and they said those scenes slowed the movie down. Singer never had a public screening for the film.

He should've. This is a big movie. This is what you need to do.

at the beginning of the long documentary on Disc 2 of SR, Tristan Lake Leabu is running lines with Bryan Singer and it seems like Tristan was going to be the little kid that narrated the comic book opening...
I thought it was kinda cool.

Also, Luthor's responsibility for Superman's return to Krypton was the one thing I was really bummed didnt make it to the final cut.

yes, Luthor revealing his role in the fabrication of the Krypton story ( I guess that would relate to the "Possible Signs of Life" part ) would have been the "icing on the cake" during the stabbing scene.

Not only are Lex and his goons kicking the crap out of Superman physically, but Lex revealing that would have been like the final "emotional blow" to an already wounded Superman.

And, just imagine Spacey delivering those lines....mocking Superman for his naivety and gullibility........that would have ooooozzzeeedddd badass and ruthlessness.

And, imagine if we got a shot of Superman's face when he heard that.......angry and sad, not just at Lex, but also at himself that he could be so easily tricked ( and hence causing him to hurt/lose everything that is dear to him on earth ).

shame we never got to see that.........

That stupid friends and family screening is what happened..he should have gotten strangers to view it, half fans, and half non-fans..

I think that the best idea that was scrapped is easily the "Lex being responsible for the news of Krypton", it was in the video game and novel.

Although, the one poster's idea of having had BRAIN.I.A.C. relay a signal to Earth's satellites with word of Krytpton to lure Superman out could be used in the sequel quite well.

-R

And it would be even better if Superman brought the core of Brainiac back with him from Krypton without realizing.

Its a great way to use the Return to Krypton sequence in the sequel.

I can see two possibilities with the groundwork that Singer layed out. The obvious development would be that the crystals thrown down into NK by Kitty would develop into either Brainiac or Eradicator. Another idea might involve the ship that Superman buried in Smallville brought something back with it. You never know.

I'm hoping they do the Eradicator. I mean, when you introduce kryptonian technology that can turn into just about anything AND a genetically impure Kryptonian... those are two things that are practically BEGGING to be put together...

Another thing i missed in SR was the naming of New Krypton and after seeing the scene on the DVD I think they should use the footage in the sequel or just write it into the script for the new movie. And instead of "Planet 10," I think Gil (or someone) should suggest "Pluto II" as a name :oldrazz:

I am 100% behind using the Eradicator being after a certain non-pure blood Kryptonian child. I also like Lex creating Metallo or Brainiac surfacing as the story progress. Gives Superman alot to deal with, and I like the idea of Superman choosing to take away Jason's powers at the FOS chamber in order to save him.

You can see the pages of the intro comic in the SUPERMAN RETURNS GAME as a bonus award.

really....i'd have to check that.

even though the games kind of crappy and repititive........but FLYING is cool......and it's always cool to sneeze and blow the Daily Planet Globe off.....sending it falling onto the unsuspecting ppl below......bwahhahahahahahaha......

WB didn't want a 4 hour movie. I was dissapointed that we didn't get a directors cut DVD with all that stuff added back in.

If Singer does produce a "Director's Cut" (and like a lot of you here, I hope he does), I have a feeling it won't be until later this year or next year.
