Was "Appointment in Crime Alley" a comic? I wouldn't be surprised, since there were a lot of stories about it at the time...

I don't know if it's a comic, but there's a story called "There's No Hope for Crime Alley" that's similar to it.

Yeah, Appointment in Crime Alley is based on There's No Hope for Crime Alley. Personally, I think the issue is much better than the episode.
