What is with music these days?

Heh, I didn't notice the double post...

I wouldn't equate song length with talent. Patience by Guns n Roses is one of the worst songs of all time, yet that clocks in at well over 5 minutes, whereas Best Immitation of Myself by Ben Folds Five whizzes by at just over 2 and a half minutes.

I think that the charts are a nice introduction to those who have only a passing interest in music. I equate the pop charts with films such as The Fast and the Furious, I Know What You Did Last Summer and films of a similar ilk.

Ballads as good as Meatloaf? That's actually impossible, but I think you'll find that We Came Along This Road by Nick Cave, anything by Elliott Smith, and the majority of Rufus Wainwright's back catalogue will tug at the ol' heart strings just as effectively (if not more so) than Stairway to ****ing Heaven.

I'm not making a case in defense of chart music, I just have a problem with thise dismiss modern music as musically inferior to the days of yore.

Yeah, I forgot how cool Ringo Starr is...

Yet it is. The originality is gone. Everything sounds the same.

You'd have a point, if you weren't so incorrect...

Okay, look I happen to be very well educated in music. I grew up on Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, The Who, Queen, The Beatles and many other of the greatest bands of all time. I KNOW MUSIC.

I've listened to stuff. I know all the mainstream stuff and I've heard most underground music, and it all sounds the same to me. Just the same harmless, inoffensive, pointless, meaning mainstream crap. There's nothing original.

I do like The Killers and The White Stripes, though.

And with that, your argument died...

Incidently, you do not sound like someone who KNOWS MUSIC. You sound like an elitist snob.

No it didn't. You're just saying that because you can't come up with a better argument.

And I know music. If you honestly think Ben Folds and Good Charlotte are better than Zeppelin and The Who, then you're the one whose argument has died.

There is no argument though. I'm not going to be able to change your mind because your so deeply rooted and invested within the bowels of 'classic rock' that you lack the ability to climb out.

I don't like The Killers but The White Stripes are one of the best bands out there right now. They've brought back the blues to mainstream rock in a big way. Well, I actually wouldn't call the band mainstream but they're popular and well-known enough to be.

Good. It's better than any of the crap out the today.

You're the simple shallow minded individual who doesn't like to be challenged by his music. Everything must be harmless, inoffensive and no longer than three minutes, carrying no real message or anything like that.

And yes, The White Stripes are one of the best bands out there.

INCORRECT ASSUMPTION!

I am at this very moment listening to Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Tom Waits, Paul Simon and Andrew Bird are a bunch of my favourite artists.

You seem to think that modern music is limited to the charts, what you hear on the radio or anything that isn't played on a Gibson Les Paul.

Bands that are better the White Stripes, but not limited to, include
  • The Arcade Fire
  • Okkervil River
  • The New Pornographers
  • The Magnetic Fields
  • Ben Folds Five
  • PJ Harvey
  • The Walkmen
  • Pavement
  • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
  • Ani Defranco

I can't discount any of your arguements because i do agree on some of them and it's not in my nature. I won't come out and say todays music is completely inferior to classic rock, as i said the NonPoint Concert i went to last Saturday totally freaking rocked so there is always hope.

There are 2 things that you are 100% correct on

Ballads as cool as Meatloaf, totally impossible.

Ringo Starr is cool.

So, are you always such a self indulgent prick, or is this just an internet thing so that you feel better about yourself?

Opeth is far from mainstream. Same with Dream Theater, Nevermore, Mastodon, High on Fire, Skyclad, Om, Sunn O))) ...

Should I go on?

Of all the posts, you pick the one that's the least self induldgent...

I would agree Led Zepplin and the Who are far superior.

No doubt. For me, their my two personal best.

And I've been meaning to tell you this, but your avvy is awesome.

I concur (specifically The Who in regards to Good Charlotte and bands of a similar ilk. I'm looking at you, Bowling For Soup...), but I'm not about dismiss 'modern' music as a whole. That would be alarmingly closed minded, and generally a bit silly.

Ringo was everyone's favourite Beatle and if he isn't, he should be.

Ringo is underrated. Everyone says he's not that great of a drummer, but he was perfect for what The Beatles' music needed. He'd be out of place in Zeppelin or The Who, of course.

I concur. What made Ringo a great drummer is that he couldn't hear anyone else half of the time (screaming fans, man), yet still managed to keep in time.

The Beatles anthology DVD boxset is a must buy for all you Ringo fans...

As a side note, don't you think that Back Off Boogaloo sounds just like Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out? Of course, this does nothing for my argument against new music lacking originality, but I just thought I'd mention it anyways...
