One thing I believe we should clarify -- and which Snyder & Co. endeavoured to do in the run-up up to the release of MOS -- is that there's a difference between "dark" and "serious".
I think MOS strove for a serious tone, which is fine by me. Superman is my favourite superhero and I appreciated the fact that Snyder was approaching the subject with such a degree of reverence, related to the fact that he's a comic book nerd who sees these heroes in mythological terms (which is fitting, since the DC heroes are closer to the pantheon of gods in the Greco-Roman sense than Marvel's). But while there might have been "dark" moments in MOS (Zod's fate comes to mind), the movie as a whole appeared to be exactly what it claimed to be: a serious take on the Superman mythos.
While I agree that a tone similar to Superman: The Animated Series would be close to ideal, personally I'm excited to see the continuation of Snyder's take on Big Blue, as well as Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc. At the very least, we know he'll make them look cool if nothing else.
