BvS What kind of humor would you like to see in Man of Steel 2/Batman & Superman?

One thing I believe we should clarify -- and which Snyder & Co. endeavoured to do in the run-up up to the release of MOS -- is that there's a difference between "dark" and "serious".

I think MOS strove for a serious tone, which is fine by me. Superman is my favourite superhero and I appreciated the fact that Snyder was approaching the subject with such a degree of reverence, related to the fact that he's a comic book nerd who sees these heroes in mythological terms (which is fitting, since the DC heroes are closer to the pantheon of gods in the Greco-Roman sense than Marvel's). But while there might have been "dark" moments in MOS (Zod's fate comes to mind), the movie as a whole appeared to be exactly what it claimed to be: a serious take on the Superman mythos.

While I agree that a tone similar to Superman: The Animated Series would be close to ideal, personally I'm excited to see the continuation of Snyder's take on Big Blue, as well as Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc. At the very least, we know he'll make them look cool if nothing else. :wow:

I agree with Flint Marko in the sense that I'd rather hear that the personality of the characters in these films will determine the tone. Like Joss Whedon says, I don't think DC should try to copy Marvel or anyone for that matter, not even their own successful films. Each property should be approached as its own thing with its own style and go on from there.

I like Marvel and yes Marvel are way ahead of WB and Sony as far as success goes with comicbook movies. All the Marvel films that I've seen don't really have their own style to a huge degree though, they follow a certain patern. And Edgar Wright's departure shows that they just aren't letting their filmmakers do whatever they want and is best for the character. That's kinda all good though because you can't argue with results. People dig their films and they are hugely successful.

The truth is I have no idea if WB/DC's plans will work out, honestly it's just a wait and see thing. But I know one thing is certain, copying Marvel's tone won't work, differentiating themselves with "good" films with a different tone is a good idea I think.

I'll say good luck to WB when it comes to critics though, there is already a built in bias towards the tone that they have decided this universe will be so I don't know if some will review the film that is in front of their faces or what they want it to be.

So much sense in this post

Exactly, everything I've been saying here. I'm not opposed to a more serious approach, I just think it needs to be done when the film calls for it. Man of Steel didn't call for it, in my opinion.

I don't think you can really say this. By all accounts they let the Russo brothers, Joss Whedon, Shane Black, James Gunn, Kenneth Branagh, and Joe Johnson make the movie they wanted. They clearly have certain stipulations for their film makers, so obviously each film maker doesn't get to do just whatever they want, but more directors than not leave with good things to say about Marvel. Even Favreau still has a solid working relationship with them.

There is not a bias against WB, that is absolutely ridiculous. Man of Steel received mixed reviews because it had multiple glaring problems, not because of some imagined prejudice amongst critics.

Every film needs a bit of humour to lighten the mood. You can't all be serious and dark throughout the whole film. That's writing 101.

You can mix in levity without over the top campiness.

I want to see the kind of humour where Superman levels a city and he's like

giphy.gif

And then Batman gets all

And then Wonder Woman talks with Aquaman and they're like

And then the rest of the soon-to-be-formed Justice League act like this as they see two meatheads going at it because measuring *****.

That would make my decade.

I laughed a little too hard at this.

You sir, are an awesome human being.

Lex seems to have some light hearted humor as part of a facade and I think some of the interaction between Clark and Bruce could count as humorous as well. Looking forward to how the humor is handled in BvS and written by Terrio!

I've said time and time again on the BvS open boards that humor is a powerful tool in a filmmaker's arsenal and if misused you can get a horribly cheesy superhero movie (Batman & Robin) but if used moderately and at the right times (X-men DOFP or TWS) can be one of the best highlights of the film.
