The Last Jedi What loose ends do you want tied up in VIII?

That was partially explained already, though through interviews rather than the movie itself-- The map isn't specifically to Luke, it's to the first Jedi Temple.... Which is where the people that knew him best believe him to be. The portion of the map that the First Order had (from the old Imperial Archives) was also in Artoo, thanks to his jacking into the Death Star computer in ANH.

Don't know how Lor San Tekka got his part of it, but I believe his backstory is that (as well as being a leader for one sect of the Church of the Force) he was an explorer or archaeologist. So maybe it was him who helped Luke track down the Temple in the first place?

The Visual Dictionary says of Lors,

As the Empire toppled, retreating Imperial Officials destroyed records that would have been vital to the New Republic's attempts at galactic reconstruction. New Republic bureaucrats turned instead to firsthand accounts from well-traveled locals to fill in the gaps. A seasoned traveler and explorer of the more remote fringes of the galaxy, Lors has proven his worth to the New Republic and the Resistance many times over.

In his travels, Lors San Tekka uncovered much of the history if the Jedi Knights that the Galactic Empire had tried so hard to erase. Others now seek him for his knowledge of Jedi Secrets.

It also says that the map is stored on an antiquated storage device.

So putting it together, at some point in Lors travels during his life, he found the old storage device with the map to Ahch-to. After the Empire fell, Lors helped the New Republic and Resistance. Leia and him worked together and had dealings. They were possibly friends based on the way Lors talks to Kylo. Luke was drawn to Lors for his knowledge of the history of the Jedi. At some point after ROTJ Lors showed his portion of the map to Luke, and R2 found the rest of the map in his data banks from when he linked with the Death Star. They put the map together showing Luke the way to Ahch-to. After Kylo massacred Luke's Jedi Academy, Luke went to Ahch-to. R2 and his portion of the map went to Leia. Lors kept the other portion of map that was on the storage device.

Midichlorians are one of the most reviled things in the franchise. And pretty much everyone that works on the films and books that have spoken about the Force seem to consider the Force a mystical thing beyond technical explanations. That is to say, how the Force was presented before Lucas had the hairbrained idea to try to "explain" the Force in TPM with pseudo biology. It's very likely that Midichlorians will never be mentioned in the films, or the canon, again.

[YT]ToOwALsME1A[/YT]

That's the only explanation the Force needs.

I've always felt that the easiest way to resolve Midichlorians is to switch them from cause to effect. TPM (and if I remember the Yoda stuff in CW Season 6) indicated that Midichlorians were what gave people their force powers, giving it a biological basis.

But the best way to deal with it is to make it that Midichlorians are simply organisms that are naturally found everywhere but for some reason are found in higher levels in beings who have a stronger natural affinity towards the Force. As a result testing for Midichlorian levels had become a quick field test that Jedi could perform on people while they were traveling around the galaxy (something that could be done with a small piece of kit that could be easily included as part of a Jedi's standard equipment). It would not give a definite result (their levels might be lower in some species compared to others due to biology) but it could give them a rough idea.

At this point they could completely retcon midichlorians and I wouldn't care.

I have a feeling in EP 8 Luke will talk about things regarding the Force that we the audience have never been privy to. What reason has he to go in search for the very first Jedi Temple? That question and it's subsequent answer really intrigues me. Luke could very well dismiss what we've learned from TPM and tell Rey the old Jedi were far too scientific and technical about the usage and understanding of the Force.

In our real world, people go to church in search of inner peace and understanding (and even forgiveness). Perhaps by discovering the first Jedi Temple, Luke has found an understanding of the Force in ways other Jedi have never before, including Yoda.

So I want to see the mythology of the Force opened up and expanded a bit more.
(And I've said this a hundred times but I also want to see more politics regarding the New Republic because the political state of the galaxy has and will always effect the type of characters we get and who they are).

Also, I know a lot of people feel apprehensive about the director chosen for EP 9....but I believe at one of the TFA premiers he was on the red carpet being interviewed and he said something about the Force....I don't remember what he said exactly, but it kinda perked my interest a bit because it seemed to go in line with everything I mentioned above.

EDIT: Found it. Colin Trevorrow talks briefly about the spirituality of the Force as something he's excited to explore more about.

I know I ain't welcolmed around these parts, but if I may add to the the Midichlorian/Force conversation...

The emphasis on Midichlorian count should be considered a factor in the fall of the Old Jedi Order.

Like someone said earlier it could have been used as a quick test to measure how Force Sensitive a person was, but at some point it became the definitive test in which pupils were taken to be trained or turned away by the Jedi.

All those pupils who were turned away from Jedi training because of an arbitrary system of measure could have changed the way things played out during Palpatine's coup after the Clone Wars.

IMO it all feeds into the idea I proposed a couple months back. The Jedi Order had become arrogant and dogmatic in practice and stopped reading what the Force was writing on the wall because it clashed with their Jedi Code.

I hope that we get a precise figure for the number of people (encompassing a large number of galactic races) that were killed in Starkiller's attack on the Hosnian system. I would hate to see such a thing brushed aside, especially since it would make for a perfect tool for the Resistance to rally more races and worlds to the cause of bringing down the First Order. Five colonized worlds...what do you guys think, 20 billion? 30? 40? Whatever, it's huge, far more than both Death Stars ever got.

I didn't see Rogue One so maybe they added to the history that may already help answer a question. Why does either side need force users to win a galactic war?

If Luke is Rey's dad, who is mom? And why was she left?
Why Luke felt he needed to disappear?
How did Maz get the Skywalker saber?
Scenes in Rey's vision explained (Knights of Ren)?
What made Kylo fall to the Dark.

Basically:

Who Snoke is and what he wants
Who the Knights of Ren are and what they want
A clear up of the status quo
Rey's parentage
The whole thing with the First Order and how they came to actually be (I think time's passed on this one)

Pretty much what should have been explained in TFA. Not withholding for mystery's sake. This is basic stuff. The fact I still don't know what the **** could happen in Ep. 8 is a knock on TFA because there really wasn't anything to latch onto to carry us forward. There wasn't really anything to keep secretive. Everything that was kept secret was predicted. I mean what REALLY was kept secret that we didn't already know? It makes the Abrams secrecy even more frustrating. Now it could be anything. It's like starting all over again. Another chance to do this right which is one of the reasons I'm excited.

If we look at both trilogies, it's the 2nd episode of those trilogies that really puts the story and characters in motion. The first film has always been the setup and introductions. The real meat will (and has always) taken place in the next 2 episodes. So I'm confident we'll get a much clearer picture of where the Republic stands with the Resistance and First Order.

My main thing is what's happened to the New Republic. What government is left in power? The implication is that the New Republic, its Senate and the Republic Fleet are all gone.
