As a Defender only. ;) But seriously, I really really really don't want him to be an Avenger. Consultant, yes and if there is Midnight Sons or Defenders down the road, definitely. I want the MCU to get away from being so Avengers dependent and become a larger espansive Marvel Universe which is, while always being an Avengers fan, what got hooked on Marvel in the first place. The Marvel Universe is huge even without webhead, the mutants or first family.

I need to clarify. Member of the team means actually part of the team as opposed to just appearing in the movie? This isn't asking whether he should appear in an Avengers movie or not, right?

Defenders only. which, surprisingly, is not an option in the poll.
and with Defenders I mean Defenders, not Heroes for Hire and their Lawyer

It sucks they're using the name Defenders for something that has nothing to do with it.

This.

Even without Silver Surfer, Marvel could still have made a proper Defenders movie. They have Hulk, Dr Strange, Namor (who could probably be used in an ensemble movie but might be more complicated for a solo movie) and presumably Nighthawk, Hellcat and Valkyrie. They also have Luke Cage and Daredevil, both of whom have been closely associated with the proper Defenders.

Surfer was only a brief member in the original run.

So yeah, if Strange were in a proper Defenders movie, Marvel could replicate their success twice. Instead of just having one super team with the Avengers, they'd have two.

As it stands now, his best bet is probably Midnight Sons (we could get Blade and Ghost Rider) or as a distant second, the Avengers. But Strange doesn't really feel like a true Avenger but only really as much as someone like Spider-Man and Wolverine.

The problem with putting him on a team is that he can solve most problems/threats all on his own (he's that powerful). So they almost always end up having to nerf him power-wise in some way to justify why he doesn't. Either he's not at full strength, or he's gone crazy with dark magic, or some such nonsense. I could see him popping up to help out The Avengers from time to time (like whenever Thanos finally shows up, they'll need his help with that one), but he should really be on the team.

Magic consultant to help them in areas they can't fully understand.

They should've named the Netflix crossover Heroes for Hire. That fits better than Defenders, there's actually a connection there.

But I don't think the Defenders will be working for hire, so the name HFH doesn't work in that context.

On a separate note, I also think Strange should be in the Illuminati eventually.

They probably just think that "Defenders" sounds better. Heroes For Hire could lead to some unfortunate implications in the audience's minds "heroes who charge for their services aren't real heroes" and all that. Plus calling it "Defenders" give it symmetry with The Avengers.

"heroes who charge for their services aren't real heroes"
like police, fire fighters and others? heck, I'm pretty sure the Ghostbusters themselves were no non-profit organisation

Except for Daredevil. Or the "for hire" aspect. Luke Cage and Danny Rand are Heroes for Hire. I don't even think Jessica Jones is, but I'm sure she'll fit just fine there. But Matt Murdock doesn't.

Presumably Jessica Jones is though, if she's a private detective. Does she get paid in fish?

And Daredevil is a lawyer, who is hired, and is a hero. He may not be a hero for hire in that he's a hero that is hired for his heroic services, but he is a hero who is hired for his legal services. A hero for legal hire.

So Heroes For Hire would've been an all-encompassing title which would've been the most appropriate. They can still change it since they've changed Jessica Jones back to AKA Jessica Jones.

That would leave Dr Strange to actually form the Defenders with Hulk and others.

You're reaching, man. Heroes having careers does not make them heroes for hire. Unless they are hired for superheroic services Iike Iron Fist and Luke Cage, they aren't the same.

But with Jessica Jones, that's all she does now. It's not like she's a superhero anymore who has a separate detective career. If she's any kind of hero, it's a hero in the same vein as a policewoman. But since she is a private detective with her own agency, she is hired.

And I don't think it's any more reaching than having titles in Agents of SHIELD like "The Things We Bury" which refer to more than one thing and can be interpreted at several levels.

They don't have to be pure super heroic services for hire.

He may not be a hero for hire in that he's a hero that is hired for his heroic services

Which is exactly the point. Anything else is just sophistry.

Jessica Jones doesn't consider herself a hero, which is why she's not a hero for hire. She's a PI for hire. Obviously, we consider herself a hero, but there's a in-plot reason she wouldn't call herself a hero for hire.

Not even remotely the same thing. Police and firefighters get a salary from the government, but they're not actively charging the people that they save a fee to save them.

Jessica is a PI, she doesn't consider herself a superhero. She's "retired." And Matt Murdock charges a fee as a LAWYER, not a hero.

I want Strange in the Midnight Sons. I have no desire to see him in the Avengers or Defender.

I think for a bunch of Street level heroes Defenders works well as title.

They aren't using the canon Defenders team for two reasons, IMO:

1. They don't have most of the important members. Silver Surfer is at Fox, Namor is at Universal atm, and Hulk is already an Avenger, he's not being shifted.

2. There is no good reason for there to be a Defenders team, no compelling distinction between them and the Avengers that you could justify a movie with.

So, might as well take the name and use it for a new team that doesn't have a good name.

He's probably most likely gonna end up an Avenger, but I'd rather see him as part of Midnight Sons with Blade and Ghost Rider. I think it would help keep him as more of an occult character.

I want him to be involved in Avengers but as an independent consultant rather than team member. He can have much more influence on a Midnight Sons. That might be something for the next Phase.

He should be the one to make Stark realize science can't explain everything.
