Mars Express

Them frenchies sure know how to create sci-fi. Them bastahs don’t play around. Now, this is a mash up of things we’ve seen before, plenty of times, it wears the obvious influences on their sleeves and it’s still manages to do something new towards the end. One particular moment made me angry, but this is cred to how invested I was by then. I’m always happy to see a good noir in any form. 8/10

Carmilla (1989)

Little-known TV adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's short novel. Running at just under an hour, it relocates the story from Styria to the American South, although the time period looks to be the same (mid to late 1800s). It's also a very abridged version of the story, whilst at the same time adding some elements not found in the original. Meg Tilly makes a good Carmilla, Ione Skye is the heroine (here named Marie, instead of Laura), Roy Dotrice plays her father, and Roddy McDowall (an old hand at facing vampires after his second Fright Night movie just the year before) is the police Inspector who suspects Carmilla's true nature. Production-wise it's about on a par with the old Tales from the Darkside horror TV series, but this succeeds on its performances. The eeriest scene is undoubtedly when Carmilla is behind Marie in the mansion grounds at night feeding from her neck; it's only when the camera pulls right back that we see Carmilla is actually floating in the air as she's feeding - with her feet higher than her head. Apparently this version hasn't been available to buy since its original VHS release, but it is on YouTube. Interestingly, it was co-produced by the late Shelley Duvall (RIP). 6/10

Here’s the latest movies I saw:

Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part Three (2024)

The only memorable thing is about this movie is seeing Kevin Conroy’s very last performance as Batman but aside from that this movie a big pile of mediocre. Animation is terrible and lifeless. Utterly boring and dull overall. 5/10. Good riddance to this universe.

Bad Boys: Ride Or Die (2024)

Not as good as three but it’s very stylistically and energetically directed. Rating: 7/10

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

overall rating 7.5/10. There’s a lot of swearing and killing, which was neat but it needed more chimichangas. :o

I rewatched Blade last night after not seeing it for YEARS... I was surprised at how simple and straightforward it is. Besides a couple of CGi shots near the end it's well made, well shot. Wesley Snipes looks and acts like a true superhero character. It was so refreshing to see this movie after so many interconnected stuff from the last 15 years.

The CGI in the final battle is my only gripe with Blade. I prefer Blade II but Blade is a solid action-horror and Snipes is perfect in it. And Udo Kier is great.
