What was the last movie you watched? Part 2

Lawd what an acid trip this movie was. Definitely worth a one time watch at the very least but this was pretty relentless from beginning to end. I can't say I was ever bored though and it has a really good cast.

6/10

I can't believe I've never watched this before because I enjoyed it quite a bit. Great cast, an awesome 80's score and just awesome direction from Michael Mann throughout. The only thing that kind of let me down was the ending but other than that it's definitely one of the better higher budget 80's studio horror films that I've seen.

7/10

A decent enough watch mostly because of the practical gore which is pretty great and the cool makeup/creature effects. I just wish the script and the acting was a bit better but hey at least it's better than the last 4 or 5 Resident Evil movies and that MK 2021 movie.

From Roger Moore With Love

The documentary starts with full on action: Roger Moore narrating himself speeding a fast boat in Florida swamps during filming and commenting on his glorious life, but all off a sudden crashes. That was apparently his early experience as being the new James Bond actor according to his own narration.

Except, it actually isn't.. All of a sudden we see British actor Steve Coogan in a studio doing a brilliant imitation of the late Sir Roger Moore for this documentary. And that's how this heartwarming documentary will go on; Coogan narrating Roger Moore's life and career in first person. Apart from various old British TV archives, film sequences etc, the material is often built on the vast VCR recordings from Moore himself filming his private life with his family, gathered from one of his sons. But still often narrated by Coogan lol.

During the documentary we also get interviews and comments by friends, family and film collegues like Joan Collins, Jane Seymour, Christopher Walken (who apparently got close to Moore after Walken's villian role in that 80s Bond flick I don't remmember now lol) etc.

The story of Moore's life starts off with learning about his humbling upbringings, his early film caréer in small roles until he gets the chance to play this particular character from litterature which is about to be adapted to a TV show: The Saint. By that time, he's already invented his "Roger Moore persona": Handsome, elegant British accent, charm etc. Quite a hit, and then going to next successful TV show co starring Tony Curtis in The Persuaders. The rest is history - Live And Let Die and several other Bond flicks during the 70s and 80s. We also get to see his later life in which he got heavily invested into global charity which eventually would give him the title Sir.

As a kid during the 70s I grew up with TV reruns of The Persuaders and The Saint (the latter which accidently made the rest of the world aware of our little cool sports coupé - the Volvo P1800). It took some serious years, but eventually I could watch The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker etc. Hence Roger Moore will always have a huge nostalgic place in my heart, even though he didn't have the acting range like Brosnan, Craig, Dalton or Connery.

And I will fight you - this is the best intro to a TV show. Ever!

Apart from the cool visuals, we get ridiculously awesome music by the one and only John Barry (who wrote other various Bond related stuff as well):

And of course we need to watch the classic first episode car chase in glorious early 70s split screen window vision, around stunning Monte Carlo. Ferrari vs Aston Martin:

I was a massive fan of The Persuaders! Still watch the occasional rerun (Lord Brett Sinclair is my favourite Moore performance of all). And yes, it had one of the greatest openings (credits sequence and music) of any programme ever! 👍🙏👌

Offerings (1989)

A very blatant ripoff of John Carpenter's Halloween. Childhood bullying, a dare, and a prank result in seven year old John Radley falling down a well on the edge of town. Since then he's been lying semi-comatose in Oakhurst State Mental Hospital. One night 10 years later he regains consciousness and has a rush of mental images of what happened to him. Killing his nurse as she's about to give him an injection (no prizes for guessing how) he breaks out and heads to his home town to wreak revenge on those responsible for what happened.

The budget on this was obviously miniscule. The entire cast are unknowns (for 99% of them this is their only screen credit), as was director Christopher Reynolds, (who went on to direct just one more movie), whilst most of the crew doubled as extras. The synth score (by Russell D. Allen) is an outrageous copy of Carpenter's - in some places note-for-note - and the main beats of the story are just as heavily 'inspired'. Yet - miraculously - it still fails to deliver on two things... This is a slasher made in 1989; tropes and expectations were well-established, and the major franchises were underway. The two main things people watched slashers for were gore and boobs; this has little of the first (the kills are lacklustre, some even happening offscreen), and none of the second - it's really not hard to guess why the film is pretty much forgotten.

Credit for the cinematography (night-time shots of the hospital exteriors during John's escape look particularly good), a cute female lead, and a cast who whilst lacking talent, at least seem to be giving it a good go. 4/10
