Blood Simple (1984)
I watched this in late 80s and somehow never got around for a rewatch, even though I've been thinking about it during decades. This is actually the second time only. Weird, huh? I'd forgot most of the story, but remembered how I thought I'd look out for more from these Coen Brothers, they seemed quite.. promising? Miller's Crossing is another one i haven't watched since back at the cinema, and is high on the rewatch list.
Anyhows, damn such a great rewatch this was. We get great acting from John Getz and Dan Hedaya (whom I actually don't remember from anything else?). We also get to see a young Frances McDormand in her first Coen brothers' flick (yeah, their first as well..), who also of course delievers with an adorable Southern accent and all. And, then there's M. Emmet Walsh (who sadly passed away last year). Whenever he turns up he goddamn devours the scenes. RIP.
A really tense noir/thriller/murder story closer in athmospere to e.g. No Country For Old Men than their lighter stuff like The Big Lebowski, Arizona Junior etc, still though having a couple of dark humour moments. IMHO an excellent debut, and I dare to say highly recommended even regardless if you're a fan or not of other Coen flicks. And oh, how I miss when great tense movies like this could have a perfect runtime of 95 mins.
