Deliver Us From Evil (2014)

John Wick: Chapter 4

Absolutely insane. I don't know if they will end it there, but if they do it was a good note to go out on. Nice after credits sequence - completely forgot about that person!
I wonder who was actually her intended target - Caine, or his daughter? The latter would probably punish him more, as payback for Caine's killing of Akira's father.
8/10

Very much looking forward to the prequel/sidequel, Ballerina.

When Joel Schumacer was chosen as the new director to Helm The Batman franchise,
This was the film I thought of, at the time .

It's one of his best imo, and if he had been able to do a more grounded ,and Gothic Batman film with The Scarecrow, it may have looked something like this.

It's the closest to Supernatural horror that Julia Roberts has ever gone in her filmography I think., so it's kinda an outlier , in terms of her film catalog.

Scream of the Banshee (2011)

One of the surprisingly few horror movies to feature a Banshee. Lauren Holly plays a university professor, who - with a couple of students - is working on an artifact cataloging project. An anonymous delivery containing an ancient armoured gauntlet and a hand-drawn map of 'section 3' - a rarely used university storage area - leads to the discovery of a false wall, behind which is a large metal box. Before you know it these genius's have released the spirit of a screaming Banshee (captured in Ireland by the Knights Templar in 1188 AD). But this Banshee doesn't warn of impending death; she goes around actively killing people with her scream. But in order to die, you have to scream too. If you can stop yourself doing that, you're fine! Well, you're not dead, at any rate.

This is an After Dark/Syfy co-production - and looks it. A prologue of slow-mo Templars on horseback hunting-down the Banshee is pretty atmospheric; but once the action shifts to present day it all starts to look very low-budget. Honestly, it could pass for an episode of Warehouse 13, or any of those supernatural shows (I could believe this was conceived as a pilot). The general plot is okay, but the details are lacking, with much unexplained. The dialogue too is really bad in places (and not helped by some 'variable' acting). Earlier designs of the Banshee are good, but as the film nears its climax she becomes more monster-like in appearance (again, no explanation), and looks embarrassingly bad. And whilst most of the effects are practical, there is some awful CGI.

This would have been better made in the late 80s/early 90s. It could fit right in with the vibe of Evil Dead or Night of the Demons (it would just need more gore, better makeup - and probably nudity!). Very poor. 3/10

Damned by Dawn (2009)

'Sick of waiting for Evil Dead 4? Check Out Damned by Dawn...' says the DVD cover, along with 'A whole lot of Raimi in Aussie shocker Damned by Dawn', and 'When the Banshee cries, the Dead will rise'.
'After receiving a mysterious gift from her dying grandmother, Claire takes her new boyfriend home to meet her family who live on an isolated property in the country. The family reunion begins well but Claire soon becomes increasingly uneasy with her grandmother's medicated ramblings about a screaming banshee intent on coming for her in the night. It's not long before the family's worst fears become their reality as the banshee and her army of undead arrive to unleash blood soaked fury on them all'.

I bought this for Halloween 2010 and I've seen it a few times since. It's low budget, but looks great, with an atmospheric location, a good story, and solid performances. The Raimi/Evil Dead comparison unfortunately raises the bar of expectation, but there's no getting away from the rapid 'Raimi-cam through the woods', the book that explains all, the siege-like feeling, and even the use of the line 'Join us'! The first half sets things up nicely, and gives all the backstory we need; the second half is where it shows its limitations. Other than the Banshee herself (more on her in a mo), the undead are almost entirely CGI. And it's poor. Heavy use of fog tries to hide it, but the figures look cheaply done - frustrating, given how much effort went into everything else. But the Banshee... Actress Bridget Neval knocks it out of the park. She looks great, wearing what appears to be a tattered wedding dress, with grey skin, lank hair, black nails/lips/tongue, whilst bleeding from both eyes where she's cried so much over the years. She exudes menace, and her screams were all apparently recorded on-set - no enhancement afterwards. That is one impressive set of lungs.

I've seen reviewers tear into this movie, and it doesn't deserve it IMO. They aimed high, and did pretty well. 6/10
