HIGHLANDER II (1991)
There are basically 3 different versions of this movie available. IMDB mentions several other versions on bootleg tapes or shown only a time or two on TV airings, but for this post I will stick with the 3 most easily found. I watched all 3 of these versions (yes, I have them all on DVD)
HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING (1991) (the theatrical cut) Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Virginia Madsen, Michael Ironside
The producers decided to film this in Argentina because someone convinced them it would cost less. Unfortunately, due to a corrupt government the economy tanked and the movie wound up costing three times as much. The bonding company eventually stopped production, took editing control away from the producers and hired their own people to edit what was left....and that became the theatrical cut that people still rag on 32 years later.
This sequel did the strange action of not only ignoring what had happened in the original film but to also put in things that flat out contradict what happened in the first movie. The original HIGHLANDER was about a group of magical people who are immortal until they get their head cut off, then a giant electrical like energy is released from the dead person and absorbed by the one who did the beheading. It was a magical action of people on Earth. The sequel says the immortals are from another planet called Zeist, and that because they lost an insurrection against Ironside's character, they are sent to Earth as punishment and this will cause them to become immortal until they are beheaded. An interesting point - even though they are from another planet, they are called by their Earth names of MacLeod and Rameriz. Connery's character (who died in first movie) is not only in the flashback on planet Zeist but also is magically brought back to life in the 2024 Earth. A plot point of this film is that the ozone layer was deteriorating, people were dying by the millions from the radiation, and MacLeod builds a shield complex that covers the Earth. It keeps the radiation out, but also cuts off the sunlight from getting through. The movie takes place in 2024, this is 33 years after the shield was put in place. The Earth is in constant darkness but all plant life has not died off and we are not in an ice age....it's just that everything is drab dark and gloomy. The Virginia Madsen character is trying to prove that the ozone layer has restored itself and the shield is no longer needed. Michael Ironside's character still wants to kill MacLeod, and he decides to send himself to Earth to kill him. Some Looney Tunes action occurs, MacLeod kills Ironside and destroys the shield and everyone is happy.
HIGHLANDER II: THE RENEGADE CUT
Five years after the release of the theatrical cut (that bombed massively and pissed off all Highlander fans) the producers were able to release on video a new version of the movie. They added back in 16 minutes of cut footage, removed all references to the immortals being from another planet, dubbed in new dialogue to explain some plot points, and changed a couple of special effects shots. It still isn't a great movie but it is now watchable.
HIGHLANDER II: THE SPECIAL EDITION
In 2004 the producers again decided to work on the movie. The SPECIAL EDITION used most of the material from THE RENEGADE CUT (About a minute and a half was cut out) but they moved several scenes to different places to help continuity and changed the entire look of the movie by digitally changing the color pallet of all scenes and changed the color of the shield that is seen throughout the movie. Again...this is not now a great movie, bit is now a damn sight better version.
If you decide to watch a HIGHLANDER II movie, I suggest the SPECIAL EDITION version because it is the closest to what the director and producers originally envisioned.
