Being shot in black and white really aids the atmosphere of this adaption of Sherlock Holmes most iconic mystery, Basil Rathbone brings his usual urgency and presence to proceedings while Nigel Bruce is more serious and less buffoonish than in most of his outings as Dr. Watson.
The operation on the cops side is really poorly thought out in places but maybe that reflects the era. The film and performances have a raw, gritty energy that gives it an authentic feel and the car chase is a classic.
