LIFT (2024)

Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve) (2023) – Excellent film that is not for the faint of heart. It is raw, emotional, disturbing & gory and effectively conveys the horrendous situation the people were in.

Better than Alive (1993) thanks to greater authenticity & longer runtime allowing more of the story to be told.

8/10.

Next of Kin (1982)

Little known Australian horror/thriller. After her mother's death, Linda inherits her country estate, the mansion house of which houses a retirement/care home for the elderly. Soon after she moves in Linda becomes aware of mysterious sounds in the hallways at night, and catches glimpses of strange figures from the corner of her eye in the house and grounds. After one of the residents drowns in the bath Linda finds her late mother's diaries and reads that there have been several bathtub drownings over the years. Her mother was also convinced there was a 'presence' in the house. As Linda tries to investigate exactly what is going on she begins to feel she is in increasing danger.

The film was highly praised at the time for its photography, and its creative shots along the labyrinthine hallways of the mansion have been favourably compared to Kubrick's The Shining. It's very atmospheric. The performances are good (Jacki Kerin as Linda, John Jarratt (later to find fame as star of the Wolf Creek films) as Linda's boyfriend, and Alex Scott (well-known UK TV character actor) as the physician for the care home). Unfortunately the story is pretty underwhelming and doesn't really deliver on the scare-front (outside of a couple of eerie shots - including one reminiscent of Salem's Lot (1979) infamous window scene).

Worth a look, but it's not one I'll watch again. 6/10

AND GOD SAID TO CAIN... (1970) Starring Klaus Kinski, Peter Carsten, and Marcella Michelangeli. A revenge spaghetti western made more like a horror film. Kinski is released from prison after serving 10 years for a crime he was framed for. Arriving at the town, that his framer and ex wife who was in on the frame-up, control...he uses the ancient native American tunnels under the town to hunt down his ex partner's 30 or so henchmen and kill them one by one.

It was totally fine as a fun CBM flick. I liked Carol better as a character here than in CM 1. And yeah the Kamala family was lots of fun (hadn't watch the Ms Marvel show). Reminded me of the Blue Beetle flick, in which I enjoyed the family like this.

I was glad learning that for once we can enjoy super hero flicks (or Hollywood blockbusters in general now) under two hours (!) these days. And it kinda worked. But I felt the Dar-Ben villian (which I really enjoyed in the beginning, but then felt lacking) wasn't clearly figured out in the end for me, and then just gone. Disappointing since I want more pure evil interesting female movie villians lol. Some stuff, like the singing planet just felt eh, ok..? A lazy written Star Trek episode?

It's a mixed MCU flick for me. I highly enjoyed the interaction with the Marvel characters, and as a cat person of course loved all the flerken stuff lol. Nick Fury was fine, SLJ did his homework as usual here. Yeah, this was a decent entertaining CBM movie pretty much like Blue Beetle. Nowhere close to my favourite MCU films, but way above stuff like T:L&T..
