Zombie Flesh Eaters (AKA, Zombi 2, AKA The Island of the Living Dead, AKA Zombie, AKA Zombie: The Dead Walk Among Us, AKA Zombie 2: The Dead Are Among Us, AKA Nightmare Island ~ 1979)
Lucio Fulci was variable as a filmmaker, but when he was on form he was excellent; he's on top form here. No social commentary (leave that to Romero), no attempt at 'high art' (leave that to Bava or Argento); just an honest-to-god zombie gorefest, featuring great looking zombies, great practical effects, stunning women (Olga Karlatos, Auretta Gay, and Tisa Farrow), a coherent storyline (always a plus with Fulci), and some really top cinematography (the shots of the zombies rising from the graveyard, and then later lumbering through the village look fantastically creepy). Plus two scenes long enshrined in horror infamy; the wooden shard through the eye, and the shark vs zombie underwater fight. As for performances, they're fine, with British thesps Ian McCulloch and Richard Johnson especially giving the whole thing the gravitas it needs. Some nudity, and (obviously!) a lot of blood and gore. 8/10
