What was the last movie you watched? Part 2

View attachment 142529
Well this was an odd one indeed. Die Hard on a boat as it is often referred to and premise is a pretty cool one, although The Rock did it much better a few years later but I guess overall its not the worst action movie ever made, it has the odd moments but the lead just doesnt have the charisma or charm to sell the whole thing like a Die Hard or Lethal Weapon movie of similar times. In fact Seagal's "character" is the least friendly and likeable guy on the boat and he's meant to be the hero, lol. What elevates it though is Tommy Lee Jones, in full Two Face mode, and Gary Busey who are both let off the chain to seeming say and do whatever they want and somehow it works. I feel for poor Erika Eleniak though, who is treated pretty poorly by the characters and feels written by a 12 year old again but I guess it was just that way a bit like that at that time of movies this was made, anyway I hope she got a fat paycheck and she did what she could with what little she was given.
Amazingly, it got a sequel that took place on a train.

A slowburn thriller that almost plays like more of a conspiracy thriller at times and while I found myself kind of struggling with it for the first hour I did enjoy the more violent and satisfying third act of this.

This definitely lived up to the hype and it's easily Jai Courtney's best role IMO. He should just keep playing crazed psychos because he's great at it and Zephyr is probably one of the most badass characters I've seen in a while and one you just love rooting for.

Yeah this film still rules even after all these years and now I'm saddened that S. Craig Zahler hasn't done more films by now. I really do love this flick though and it also makes me want to revisit his other films. It's still one of the few unique, genre mashups that I really enjoy and just a badass film overall.

Finally the Fantastic 4 get the film they deserve. Great cast, great chemistry, great visuals and score that propels the whole thing along. The retro 60's world really helps set this apart from other MCU projects, Galactus is a genuine threat and Shalla-Bal is a standout. Heart warming and with actual moments not ruined by MCU comedy, Vin Diesel will love this film as its all about family. One of the MCU's best ever.

Cheapie actioner with acting from Jill Ireland that would make a porn star blush, and Jan Gan isn't much better. The action sequences are so poorly constructed and edited with some hilariously obvious stunt man switches, clearly the production didn't have time to shoot coverage. Still, the idea is decent and Bronson does his best to carry what's there.

We finally got a great F4 movie and I couldn't be happier right now as a long time fan of these characters. As much as I enjoy the previous films this is definitely the most definitive versions of these characters and the level of love, respect, care and craftsmanship on display here is just on a whole other level. I honestly wish we could get a whole trilogy of these movies set in this universe but unfortunately that ain't happening with what's coming up next which is somewhat disappointing IMO.

SUPERBOY : ROADS NOT TAKEN PART 1 & 2 ( 1989)

In the history of Superman on Film and TV , a series which is often overlooked ,and forgotten was the syndicated ,Salkind produced , Superboy TV series ,which ran from the late 80s into the early 90s.

Made between The Reeve Films and Lois And Clark : The New Adventures Of Superman , and greatly overshadowed by the beloved ,and long running, Smallville , it's easy to not ever heard of the series , let alone see it.

They don't re-run it here in The U.S. I don't think, and even as a child of the 80s, I had very little interest in watching it when it was on.

Chris Reeve was the only Superman I cared about at that point ,and while I have vague memories of it being on , as a child , I was resistant to it.

Now, more than 30 years later , the new film has made me want to check it out .
This particular episode , timely enough, deals with Superboy traveling the multiverse, in an effort to find Lex whose gotten lost in an alternate reality .

If Superboy doesn't find Lex in time, Luthor's henchwoman will make Superboy's girlfriend Lana Lang pay.

The acting really isn't that great, and it's budget is well below the standards of ABC's Lois And Clark and The CW's Smallville , Supergirl, and Superman And Lois.

That said, it's still entertaining filled with 1980s big hair styles.

Though John Hayes Newton played Superboy during the first season ,Gerard Christopher played the part from season 2 till it's cancellation .

Before the likes of Teri Hatcher , Kristen Kruek, and Ericia Durance broke the hearts of many a Superman fan , the stunning Stacy Hadiuk was a popular aspect of the show in the 80s.

Fantastic Four (1994)

Having not watched this before, I felt I ****ing had to just before the new version comes out at cinemas all over the World. And, I kinda loved it..? Of course it kinda felt like a cheap TV movie version, especially compared to the Batman flicks a coupla years before. That's fine, since it has lots of charm and funny moments enough for me to enjoy it. Lots of heart actually went in here IMHO, and one have to disregard some cheesy stuff. My biggest grip would be that Richards already knew his future wife when she was just a kid, and that she was already all over him back then ("He's so dreamy..").. *Shrugs*

The Killer (2025)
John Woo remaking himself with a Hollwood version if his classic 1989 version. It's kinda embarrassing that I only remember the broad strokes storywise from the original I actually watched within this year or so. Hence I can't really compare the story except for the singer that early on turns blind during an excessive shootout. In which the protaganist of course blames their self.

The original had Hong-Kong action veteran Chow Yun-fat as the lead, and in this version we get Nathalie Emmanuel. Maaaybe Emmanuel had some bigger emotional moments here (or maybe I just dreamed that up as I appreciate her as an actress), but this new version is just as typical Woo action flick as the original. Maybe even more Woo-esque? Lots of slo mo action and guns that seems to have endless rounds before the mags finally get changed, lots of those ****ing godamn doves perfectly flying by in that church in the finale etc.

It's a balance between fun and exhausting action moments. As I guess it should be in a John Woo flick? Well, at least Emmanuel proved really well that she's capable of playing a good protagonist action character. Omar Sy as the cop that gets involved also needs a shout out, I'd love to see him in more action flicks. I still prefer the original though, since it's a fun 80/90s time document. This felt like an over the top questionable remake. But wtf, I still had some fun watching it.

Ballerina

Welp, on to the next over the top action flick with a female protagonist. I actually had to think about not mixing these films up when writing this lol, even though they differ. I'm also too lazy to mention the cast, but it's provided on the picture/poster. Anyhows, Ana de Armas is really good here, as the raised up assassin that's on a revenge journey. I liked that despite Armas's petite physique we learn that among other things, she's trained to use that against the enemy ("fight like a girl"), which is something i've reacted to before; When a petite woman is supposed to take out some really big dudes and it sometimes look questionable (or even just ridiculous). No such dilemmas here, for sure.

Of course the story is thin like a leaf, and it's all about the action. And since it's in the "John Wick Universe" it all looks really good. The action scenes are mostly fun and inventive, and keep us wondering how the hell she's gonna get out of various situations. As expected Keanu turns up in the later part, and their interaction isn't surprising. My utmost surprise would be Angelica Huston getting an easy paycheck here lmao.

Over all, a decent action flick, much due to Armas who was highly enjoyable as the action heroine. And yes, I'd probably watch an eventual sequel.

And of course, RIP Lance Reddick. I'd forgotten he would turn up here in his last role.. :(

Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four :ff:

Featuring the original cast and film crew, as well as guest commentators, it is a very interesting story of how the 1994 F4 movie was made to satisfy contract obligations, but was never intended to be released to the public

Fantastic Four: First Steps, first off I was NEVER a huge fan of the F4 I did like the movies from 20 years ago and was on the fence with some of the casting mainly Reed and Johnny, but I have to say ALL the main leads killed as the first family of Marvel. I really really loved this movie tons of homages to the past comics and tons of easter eggs (like the origin of the number of their Earth fyi).
