Slave of the Cannibal God (AKA Mountain of the Cannibal God, AKA Prisoner of the Cannibal God ~ 1978)
Another Italian cannibal horror/exploitation movie that was banned in the UK as a 'video nasty'. This one stars Ursula Andress and Stacy Keach, and was directed by Sergio Martino. Andress plays Susan, a woman whose husband has gone missing in the jungles of New Guinea. She enlists the help of a man who knows the region, Foster (Keach), to help search for him. However, due to superstitions about a mythical race of cannibals, the authorities won't get involved; so, Susan, her brother, Arthur (Antonio Marsina), Foster, and their small party are on their own.
The first 40 minutes are taken up with introducing the characters and their efforts to get the search underway. When they finally reach the jungle there are verrry long scenes of them cutting their way through, narrowly avoiding death from spiders, snakes, alligators, etc (although some bearers aren't so lucky). Eventually we see that as the party makes its way they are being stalked by menacingly painted and masked figures...
There's all the expected violence; stabbings, beheadings, castration, rape, and general torture (courtesy of some really variable effects work). There's also the typical-for-the-genre graphic real life animal injury and death - some caused by other animals, some caused by the search party and the tribespeople. No 'humane society' monitoring here.
By the time we reach the 'climax' even the cannibals seem bored. Whilst not a lover of cannibal flicks, I see some merit in Cannibal Holocaust, and to a lesser extent Cannibal Ferox (probably the 'big two'); but this is slow, predictable, and honestly not that convincingly done. I guess Keach and Andress must have needed the money.
Only worth a look if you're a fan - and even then you might feel short-changed. 4/10
