What would ruin,.. or what HAS ruined a hero for You?

Well, in the current incarnation of New Avengers, he shouldn't be...but compared to Captain America, Wolverine and Iron Man...Spidey is a young pup.

Fighting the Sin Six, Carnage, or Venom isn't nearly as demanding as fighting The Red Skull, The Mandarin, Magneto, Kang etc. Most of Spidey's battles have been small scale compared to that.

Red skull got Owned by the Black Panther.
I can't think of ONE hero taking on Magneto on purpose AND wining.

I guess my issue is that Spiderman has SAVED New York, The other Heroes know it. He has STOPPED Juggs and FLord when other heroes were unavailable, THE CITY knows it,... Yet he still gets treated like a NOOB?

It's kinda funny how pretty much everyone has said the stuff that I was gonna say.

Yeah, Marvel's inability to let Peter Parker be anything but a perpetually ineffectual manchild has ruined him for me. Moreso than Sins Past, or the nonsensery or The Other, or his fcktardation during Civil War; Spider-Man's static childishness is core of the problem.

Decimation ruined the X-Men for me. We'll see if Messiah Complex can win them back.

I have high hopes for MC. I probably shouldn't, but I do.

The (post) Clone Saga. I had no interest in reading a Spider-Man book with someone other than Peter Parker as Spidey, so i dropped the books for the first time in my life. To this day, there's a sixteen month gap in my Amazing Spider-Man collection...

I also stopped reading X-Men around 1985 or so...it's been so long i forget, but it was when Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Colossus (my three favorite X-Men, incidentally) were all written out of the book and replaced with lame-asses like Longshot and Dazzler...i hated that. Never actually got back into X-Men again either...

I guess basically, if you take my favorite character (s) out of their own books for very long, i eventually lose interest and move on...(Brubaker, im looking at YOU, lol :yay: )...
To be fair, Longshot didn't suck in his own mini. Dazzler on the other hand, well I never read her book, so I guess I don't know for sure.

I've read the first 25 issues of Dazzler. It's not that it's bad, it just isn't my cup of tea. Dazzler is a romance/soap opera book first and foremost. It doesn't follow the typical formula of Spider-man, DareDevil, X-Men, etc. It's more of a showcase of a character and her relationships, not her powers or her adventures.

Black Panther is Marvel's version of "prep time Batman". He apparently even has a plan to dispose of Galactus if he ever threatens Earth again.

These days Magneto has been expanded. However Thor beat him back in the day.

Most people with two brain cells could tell you the X-Men have saved the Universe many times over. They still get a lotta grief. That's one of Marvel's trademarks; hard-luck heroes.

Cosmic Spider-Man pretty handily pwned Magneto without even really knowing how to use his powers, didn't he?

That the villains have no real reasoning behind being villains, I think; they're just there, being evil so the heroes have something to do.

The Other. I know people are VERY tired around these parts about it being brought up, but it pretty much ruined the character for me. That's not as if Sins Past didn't do that enough, but I read that later and The Other was the one that really broke the camel's back after a few years of crummy writing. And I grew up with the Clone Saga.

I agree with the people against Peter Pan Parker, but Quesada has been vocal in his belief to the contrary. Doesn't seem anything can do anything about it.

Yes, but I just don't see what that has to do wtih what I said.
Oh, I don't know. I took it completely out of context.

Anyway, Thor was ruined for me when he started sucking more and more in fights. I know power levels shouldn't be a big part of a character's appeal, but Thor's a god and part of that means driving home what that really means. That's pretty hard when he, at best, stalemates some pissant human like the Hulk or gets knocked out by the Wrecking Crew or needs the New Warriors' help against the Juggernaut. Luckily, JMS and Oeming before him seem to be rectifying that power problem for Thor.

Doing otherwise is sacrilege if you ask me.

What, taking things out of context or writing Thor as anything other than a badass powerhouse?

I don't mind Thor as weak every now and then to move his story along, but when he began as a character he was the epitome of godly strength. I like him like that, with Donald Blake present to give us some of that human duality.

After picking up Thor #1, I just might start following JMS' run.

I still don't think Don Blake is really necessary. Thor's got enough drama going on himself that he doesn't really need a double-life beyond being split between Midgard and Asgard. But I'm not averse to Blake. I like medical dramas (even if they are all old hat after 12 or 13 years of ER), and Blake could place Thor in situations that he normally wouldn't get into on his own, which is always a treat to see. Just so long as that one-minute rule is kept firmly in the past, I'll probably be happy JMS brought Blake back.
