What would you like to see in the rumoured new costume?

I thought the NO MAN'S LAND look was great, minus the bright yellow of the oval and the belt. I had no idea Alex Ross had been tapped to do a redesign. He'll probably focus on making Batman's codpiece look as big as possible.

As cool as the traditional design looks on paper, I think it's time for Batman to get serious and distinguish himself from the rest of the superheroes. It's time for the suit to become all black for an extended period of time, and to look less like a color-coded costume, and more like a creature of the night. The ability exists for artists to make black bats on a black field now and various textures, so the oval need not return for this to take place.

Lose the briefs. They're just pointless and silly looking. Redesign the belt to make it look sleeker and less obvious, cumbersome and garish. Maybe something along the lines of FOREVER's design, where the gadgets snap into or fold out of it.

I'd also like to see something new done with the cowl. Maybe a bit more like a helmet, with a thicker appearance. And what do you all think of being able to see Batman's eyes through the cowl for a while?

So, you want the movie Batman, in essence?

Myself, I'd like to see them do something new with what's already there. Like, say, this:

Make the costume more Mazzuchelli than Lee. However, if they were going to go with a more drastic makeover, something kinda like these would be cool.

And for those 'ultra-realistic' sticklers (you know who you are):

I hope they will do a all black suit. The same than the Howard-porter-JLA's one, or let's say a Neal adams' one in all black.
My personnal taste would be that they bring back the yellow oval, but overall, as long as they do a darker suit and longer ears. I'm fan with it.

I'd be cool with multiple suits. The mouth should always show! It's so important, people!

So, you want the movie Batman, in essence?

No. The movie Batman looks ridiculously overdone now.

I don't need to see segmented armored plating. I just want artists and writers to recognize elements of the movies that work (which btw, they've already done to a point, hence the grapple, the armored suit, etc).

That's SHH's "Wams" as previously stated..

But personally..I'd like Batman's suit to have a completely covered mask, no exposed mouth, and have a darker more streamlined suit overall. :o

Batman isn't right without the mouth. It enahnces the vulnerability and humaniy that is crucial to the character. Think about how differently Azbats would have come off if we could've seen his mouth.

Just bring back the post-Prodigal costume. Yellow oval and belt, no undies, all black. In other words, the B89 costume, sans-armor.

Perfection.

it's the Troika suit with a couple of pouches on the side? :csad:

I'd like to see the ears changed back to the Kane version, sticking out the side. Oh and purple gloves.

Armoured.
Real boots, real gloves (practical combat boots rather than the featureless catwalk boots artists keep giving him).

All black, failing that, dark grey and black.

I like seeing seams in the outfits, I personally prefer the outfit to look like clothes instead of bodypaint on a nude torso.

Frankly I could even do without the emblem on his chest. Who exactly is the emblem for anyway? Everybody knows he's batman, villains don't need to see the logo on his chest to work out who he is. Just seems pointlessly vain and gimmicky.

Maybe you're really a Captain America fan? Daredevil? Midnighter?

Vain and gimmicky...like his two-toned "superhero" costume and bright yellow belt?

BATS is a superhero...its not like they can make him pulpish with a fedora, domino mask & long black coat...........
He needs his cowl, his cape & his insignia THE UNDIES DON'T NEED TO BE THERE.... but why not take away the blade thingies on his arms too...

I just don't like this whole visible noticable armor thing THEY'RE DOING...

make it like an unoticable part of his suit (musculature) LIKE IN '89 when the thugs put the gun to his chest & say:

"What is that... Some kinda body armor, he's human after all."

IN ESSENCE THE CLOSEST THING WOULD BE A UNDIELESS DARK DARK ALMOST BLACK GREY NEIL ADAMS SUIT W/O those dangly arm things.....

Real boots, real gloves (practical combat boots rather than the featureless catwalk boots artists keep giving him).

Would the combat boots actually be practical for someone who relies heavily on agility?

Seconded. Most of my favorite Bat-artists are the ones who portray it that-a-way.

The guy who did "Broken City" is great, too.

Need to ask Saint about that, he had a perfect explanation but I've forgotten what it is.

Yes. Much more than the featureless fashion boots other artists like to give him. Gymnasts don't usually wear shoes, but if you're running around on roof-tops, broken glass, leaping between fast-moving cars, and kicking doors and people in the face then you'd opt for the sturdier boot.

I personally don't like the belt to be bright yellow either (looks fine in brown/gray/black, but its a functional feature of his suit. I'm willing to accept Bruce likes the two-tone combo (though I'd be more inclined to believe he'd go for a single tone across the body). but the emblem serves absolutely no purpose.
Criminals know who he is just by silhouette. They don't need to see the pretty design motif on his chest to work it out. Is it for Batman's own design taste ("hmmm, the outfit looks good, just needs a little something")

To me, EVERYTHING on his outfit besides the cape and cowl (with ears) could be open to change.
Anything which detracts from that look shouldn't be used (like having pouches all over his body).

Its like Indiana Jones' hat, you can have him wear pretty much anything else with it and its still Indiana Jones.

I love Bermejo's Batman outfit (especially in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel). The armour platelets aren't really visible until you get in really close, and it always looks like real clothes. AND the cape looks weighted, potentially a weapon, and not the superman 'billowy' type (the steel lines make it look like bat wings, which is a nice touch)

Eh, the boots are alright, IMO. I mean, there are alternate portrayals of them. Sometimes they're stylized leather combat boots (like in "Year One," or "Broken City" - I harp on these two stories a lot, but -), and still other times they're featureless, like you said. A good example of this is in Jim Aparo's stuff.

I'd tend to agree the emblem isn't really "neccessary". I've always thought the emblem should be explained as an additional protective plating, and a pseudo target. A psychological ploy, effectively, something to draw the eye. Like the Punisher's skull.

true, but thats really just justification after the fact, since his outfit (like most superhero outfits), are created to look eye-catching to the comic book reader, not an attempt to be in any way functional.

The real motivation behind the emblem is it looks good. I'd buy it if Alfred decided it would look nice on the front when he was stitching it together.

As for protective plating (pseudo target), thats how I always saw his cape: criminals can never quite find a target when we flies at them because his cape billows out and he's just this black shadow, and most of the bullets just go through the cape and miss his body.
