Hugo - 8/10
About 15 or 20 minutes too long but nevertheless a good story. It's great to see Scorsese take on different material. And he handles children's material incredibly well. I can see what attracted him to this project. Much of the movie is about the magic of cinema and what we should still remember and preserve which was nice. Even the film itself feels like a silent film. The performances were all good, particularly Hugo, and I really enjoyed Sasha Baron Cohen. The 3D was excellent. Not since Avatar have I seen 3D that actually feels like it should be apart of the film. It would play fine without it, but seeing the old movies done in 3D was quite a spectacle. The oldest kind of film matched with the newest technology was a terrific idea. It shows that 3D shouldn't be dismissed and can be used artistically. Is it neccessary? Not really, but for what it is, it pulled me in and enchanced the children's story book imagery, combine with some of the best cinematography I've seen this year.
