The Innkeepers

If you're a fan of lots of blood and guts with an axe wielding maniac killing 50 people throughout the film, this probably isn't for you.

A classic that keeps getting better every time I watch it. Those special effects still look pretty creepy 30 years later. Love the feelings of isolation and paranoia in the film. It has a great cast and almost all of them are memorable in some way. This was John Carpenter at the height of his abilities as a director.

OK. Not terrible but not particularly impressive either. I think the film starts pretty weakly but by the middle it begins to pick up. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is actually fairly effective in her role the problem is the script just doesn't give enough material for ANYONE to work with and do anything particularly special. Her Kate Lloyd character sometimes reminded me of Ellen Ripley from the first Alien. Capable and quick thinking but not necessarily an action movie uber heroine. I thought that towards the middle of the film, in the rec room, we finally get to see some good character interaction and conflict. One of the best character IMO was Lars. He was so on edge and untrusting of almost anyone.

At times the film seemed to try too hard to tie into the original film like they were more concerned to connecting the dots of what happened at the Norwegian camp when we saw it in Carpenter's film. I didn't mind the sometimes slavish accuracy but it would have been great if we had gotten that kind of dedication to detail AND better writing and directing. I did like how the very end of the film tied into the 1982 film. It was probably the best way they could have done it after wrapping up the story of this film and its characters. The film also works in a way that you don't need to see the original so at least theres that.

Some of the practical effects were good and a few of the CGI ones were too but here we are in the 21st century and some of the CGI effects in this thing don't come close to the impressiveness of the practical effects in the Carpenter film. And thats not just about quality but how the effects are used and how much we see. It seems like this new film was more concerned with the special effects looking good than how effective they worked within the film to give it an atmosphere. Nothing was really presented as unsettling or disturbing. It all looked a little too slick.

I think the film is worth a look but certainly no sci fi horror classic like the original. But thats true of most horror films these days.

A really good animated Superman flick. Interesting story, originating from the comic book "What's so funny with truth, justice and the American way".

Nice action scenes as well, and Pauley Perrette did a good Lois Lane.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf - 10/10

Judge Dredd - 5/10

Mars Attacks 7.5/10

A great concept mined from Death Wish, it's a little uneven but the ending is boldly chilling. 7/10
