When Geek became cool

Geek became cool because now everybody thanks to the Internet can explore their more bizarre interests. It also depends on certain movies, books, show becoming part of popculture. Now everybody has seen Star Wars, Star Trek, heard about superheroes, etc.

It's all well and good for people who live in developed countries, but for people who have these sort of interests and live in say Eastern Europe it's a lot harder. Whenever I tell people I'm a Star Wars fan they a) give me a funny look, b) start making fun of me withing minutes.

Sometimes it gets a little irritating. I suppose I could NOT talk about it but whenever I meet somebody new I feel compelled to start a conversation and most often than not, I bring up either Star Wars, or just something sci-fi related and more often than not I am not dealing with a person not interested in that stuff or worse, one that thinks that stuff is for kids and subsequently, makes fun of me.

I definetely do not live in a place where geeks are cool.

geek became cool when a group of chaos magicians made it cool during a get together to see what would happen.:wow:

It's just the next evolution of popular culture and technology.

Next gen video game systems, iPhones, mp3 players, the internet, Myspace, Comic Book movies.

How many years ago were things like video game systems, comic books, computers thought to be solely for kids and nerdy geeks?

Pen pals giving way to internet dating and myspace.

Video games to whole systems more for the serious gamer.

Computers no longer just for data entry, now a source of interaction, music, movie downloading, etc.

Comic books hitting the main stream with movies, toys, huge advertising campaign.

Things have just become more acceptable.

When I was in high school (end of the 80's), I had to hide the fact that I watched bootleg anime, collected comics and drew manga-type art in my spare time. Now, that would all be considered cool.

However, I was still skinny and scared of female rejection, so that probably would have still counteracted any coolness I might have had. :csad:

you'd have girls dieing to lay you nowdays

I was the geek in the popular crowd in high school. The gay geek in the popular crowd. Apparently I wasn't happy enough filling one niche, I had to go for two. :o

I don't think geek became cool at all. Its become a trend but it won't last. Geeks are cool when movies come out but movies geeks are rarely like real life geeks. Some movies show reality but not all. I don't see "geeky" guys getting any farther than before.

Liking geeky things is only cool if it's done in an ironic fashion. If you seriously are into it you get looked at funny.

In the past few years or more, was there ever one particular moment where being a geek was considered cool? When I was in school being a geek was looked down upon, especially if you were a black geek; but nowadays it's been embraced by pop culture, some people even try to get "geek cred".

It's a good thing, but I'm just curious as to when it all turned around.

When shows like "Beauty and The Geek" and "The Pick Up Artist" appeared on American television. There's a whole new generation of geeks, and momma's boys.

She's just catering to the guys that are into hot girls wearing glasses. Like the pornos that feature chicks wearing spectacles. :o
Mmm... feature....

It's the tv and movies that made Geeks popular, starting from the 80's...

I think being into geeky things is a hell of a lot more acceptable nowadays. It's just the media that's changed it slightly.

I discovered it was considered cool two years back. I left a college full of icky memories, and found myself somewhere else...where geekism was embraced.

Really came to me when I started one of my first lessons in my new college last year. For my multimedia course, we sat through an entire afternoon dissecting V for Vendetta. I mean, one of our recent projects was to draw, photoshop and piece together a comic in Quark Xpress.

You'd never hear about doing anything like that a few years back. Everybody's more tolerant of geeky stuff. I love my college :o

UM...I don't know where you guys got the idea, but geeks aren't cool. They may be more embraced and less looked down upon, but it is still pretty bad to be one.

How is it bad to be a geek?

My teacher is a professional guitarist, at the age of fifty, with a big family. He has a bigger comic collection than me. Like he says, it's a shame people shun aside comics, because they don't appreciate the talent involved.
Plus, the same goes with my uncle.

It is cool, it's unique to all the other interests I've came across. People have been interested in the geeky nonsense I'm into and they've picked up on it.

Basically, people find out you like that crap they get on your ass about it and never let up. But if you tell people you like it if they ask, but don't ever bring it up and such, they are more accepting. Its pretty much like, "Yeah I like it. So? Not going to tell you all the time or hide it."

Cause if you hide it and people find out, it never goes away. And if you talk about it all the time...you get ridiculed. People just like to make fun of others anyway they can. If you make it known that the stuff you like that is geeky isn't a big deal, people won't make it one.

Fair enough, I just guess the people around me act differently towards the subject of anything geeky.

Although saying this, it isn't a topic starter at parties, or meeting people straight away. I remember meeting this girl last year, whose reaction to me collecting comics was around five to ten minutes of incessant laughing. Doesn't bother me what people's opinions are of it, if they don't like it...but I hardly come across anyone who is bothered by it.

I think there is some degrees of geek, as where you can chat about comics easily. The internet and media have opened that up, making it more tolerant. I find that that way, people do find it cool.

But like I said, there are degrees. Some might not be too into the 60 Marvel figs in my room, and when I first brought my girlfriend over to my house? God, my stomach was in my throat.

Yeah same here.

I don't talk about this stuff openly or frequently with all my friends, only with my friends who like it. I don't tell my other friends openly I like comics and all that, but if they ask I won't lie.

My room is pretty much packed with figures, comics, and posters, so I try to steer people clear from that room.
