bottom line is that Hal as he exists now clearly has a lot more going for him than John as he exists now.Well, all your arguments against John hasn't stopped the likes of other characters in the same "situation" from having good or great films. So, same could happen with him if the studio felt like using him. Plus, the Hal had the things you brought up earlier and it didn't exactly work out for him.
If you don't like John, that's fine. You can just leave it at that. Not much need to justify it.
Hal as the lead brings a lot more to the table, but with John there is potential to morph him into a character that is worthy of leading the GL franchise. As he is now, i don't think he's a strong enough character. It's a pretty glaring problem how he lacks a clear nemesis. He's set on the love interest dept, but beyond the hero, the villain is the most important aspect to get right.
Sinestro/Hal all day. If you're doing a GL franchise, Sinestro has to be a primary villain, he's the Joker to Hal's Batman. And you really can't do Sinestro right without Hal, unless they merge John and Hal
