We're talking about FC-Origins-OT-TW-begin of DOFP as old timeline, and killing someone in 1973 what lead to release Sentinels in 2020, not about killing Xavier.
If Mysqtique didn't kill someone in old timeline and this lead to release Sentinels, then in new timeline when she's stopped before killing, it would still lead to release Sentinels. IMO she killed someone in old timeline, and we know Nixon didn't die in 1973.
If it was only assasination in old timeline, not killing someone, what lead to release Sentinels, then it's nothing gonna change in new timeline, they have to stop Trask Industries.

But in all seriousness, let me give it an attempt without getting too confusing.

- In the original time line Richard Nixon lives because Xavier stops Magneto/Mystique's plot to assassinate him him. The sentinels arise because Nixon is anti-mutant.

- In the new time line, Wolverine has to convince Xavier allow the assassination to happen. A much harder thing for Xavier to do. I would imagine to do so they would have to kill Nixon without letting the public know he was killed by mutants. And then probably subdue Trask somehow.

Well, were would they put the Sentinel's in the ACTUAL WH, it'd be rather cramped. Also, Nightcrawler was disguised as a tourist, so it was a surprise attack. The simplest explanation is that something altered the timeline in order to facilitate the Sentinel's creation. They didn't exist beforehand.

It says on the Trask Industries website that the Mark I sentinels were only in production between 1973-1996 so that could have something to do with the fact that they aren't present in first three movies.

True, when exactly the OT takes place is left deliberately ambiguous (the not too distant future).

Who says that's the old timeline? Xavier died/transferred his consciousness into another body, yet there he is, still in the same old wheelchair bound body in the future.

Indeed.

I suspect Old X'y showing up [BLACKOUT] at the end of The Wolverine, roughly present-day -- and Logan's stunned reaction, reminding the audience, "Yeah, this dude DIED." --[/BLACKOUT] should be the immediate clue that all is not quite as it was in the PAST...as it seems with our DAYS...or possibly, as it might be...in our FUTURE.

So where are the Sentinels in X2 when Nightcrawler attacked the Pres?

What I'm thinking is that even though the prototype for Sentinels were developed in the 70's, they still weren't anywhere near battle-capable for another 30ish years.

Similar to how we had computers in the 70's, but they weren't really much more than glorified calculators.

i dunno i think you may be surprised when it comes to the sentinels in the 70s, i'm expecting some Exagirated science here, obviously mutants involved in this X-men universe would speed up technology advances, lets be honest trask does seem to be ahead of its time technology wise if you look at the trask website

i dunno why but i can see them tested against havoks platoon just to show off all them mutant powers, i might be wrong about that though

trask creates DNA generated artificial limbs according to the trask website, which is also abit much for the 70s

im also wondering whether the defences they created for the sentinels have something to do with this picture and why these things were collected

I've been thinking about this for quite a bit, and I think the answer is that there are two people who travel back, not just Wolverine.

The "glimpse into the past" Professor X saw was the first person going through, which caused him some sort of temporal interference that he noticed.

Person A goes into the past, alters the original timeline, wiping out the first 3 movies as we know them. This person also pushes Magneto/Mystique to kill Nixon and cause the future that we see in 2023.

Wolverine goes back to undo what person A did and establish what they had fought for in the first 3 movies, a relatively accepting world still coming to terms with mutant kind.

My guess it that it's going to be a botched assassination that convinces Nixon that mutants are a threat. It's a matter of having mutants save the President from other mutants that'll change the timeline.
