It's been a long time since I've watched the cartoon. Hopefully it's still up on Netflix.

Edit: Bahhhh, it's been taken down. :argh:

Good thing I have all 5 volumes on DVD :oldrazz:

Thats a not cheap look, but more like a camera filter for the 70 scenes. If you compare the 70s scenes to the future scenes you can really see the difference. I personally didn't like especially the 4:3 scenes, but I understood what they did it.

They were trying to replicate the more grimy and gritty feel/look of 70's films like Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon. They even went so far as to have those news broadcasts shot using 70's era cameras and film. Personally, I really liked it. It captured the 70's vibe better than FC captured the 60's vibe imo (I really liked FC btw, but that was one of the films flaws imo).

I really liked the 70's Super 8 4:3 camera additions too, it added a style and realism to the film. I think Bryan Singer was going for a more realistic, grounded take on the 70's, not TOO over the top, whereas Matthew Vaughn definitely went for a more stylised, exaggerated, almost 'camper', James Bond, Austin Powers-esque style for the 60's which I actually liked. Kick Ass was also very stylised with the colours etc and Matthew Vaughn brought some of that to First Class.

During my first viewing I was way too hyped and I had seen way too many clips and read way too many spoilers - and I was also very stressed that day. I felt a bit weird and because of all the clips I had already seen I couldn't appriciate some of the scenes. I still gasped and smiled many times. But something didn't feel right... Therefore I decided I would not give my opinion until my second viewing (which was 30 minutes ago).

Now, during my second viewing I loved every single second of it. There is seriously nothing I can complain about. The action was good, the story was great, I love the characters and the acting was phenomenal. This really is the X-Men movie I always wanted. What I like about it most is that it doesn't just rely on shiny effects and big explosions like the Avengers did. The movie is emotional and it is really quite a ride. It made me smile. It made me laugh. It made me gasp. It (almost) made me cry.

It truly is one of the best movies I have seen in years and everyone who worked on this movie should be very proud.

4th time today. Still amazing.

I just saw it and give it a 8 out of 10.

I used to write big reviews, but i have no patience now.
I like it a lot, it's not perfect, but it's an amazing movie.
The strong bit is the actors; Jackman, McKellen, Stewart, Lawrence, McAvoy, Fassbender....all make an amazing job.
Page and Ashmore are also very good.
Dinklage...i expected that he had more to do and more moments to shine, but he did great.

The action in the future is very good, and powers showcase is top notch except.....

My two problems with the movie were Iceman and Xavier.
The problem with Iceman was that he should be called extinguisher-man, as his ice rays were almost gas like.
As for Xavier.....he would never prefer is legs over his mutation. That is extremely out of character.

It wasn't about preferring legs more than it was suppressing his powers because he was depressed. He was a broken man.

On another note, I love how we finally got a scene of Magneto confronting the President of the United States in front of a destroyed White House. Took em 7 movies but it was worth it.

On a side note I'd like to add that Ottman's score was absolutely fantastic. I'm just listening to Hope (Xavier's Theme) now, such an emotional piece.

I'm not sure I get how Hank's serum can cure paralysis? I mean that's not one of Charles mutations. But I'm willing to go along with it.:oldrazz:

Another thing about the "cure" that seemed too good to be true: Why wasn't it an option for people choosing to suppress their mutation temporarily? In X3 it was to be cured or not,but Hank's formula didn't "cure" mutation, only made it more manageable.Makes me wonder why Hank stopped using it eventually.

Just a random though I had earlier: have they touched upon anywhere where exactly the Sentinels were from 1973-2015 and beyond in the "old" timeline? I know we once got that teaser/Easter egg in X2 or 3 in the simulator room. But I was just wondering if any of the creative team on this or any of the X films had anything to say about them.

There's probably no answer haha, but I was just curious.

Who knows. Maybe it's addicting? Maybe he learns it to be dangerous with ill effects on the body?

We'll probably never know.

The Sentinels were not around during the "old" timeline because they were experimenting on Mystique to perfect the design and functionality of the new Sentinels. They were then released some time after the events of X3 and The Wolverine. :D.

That's a fair enough explanation, still leaves me with some questions (they needed 30+ years to figure out how to use Mystiques blood? It was kept secret all that time.) but ultimately those questions don't matter haha. I loved what we got, it was a pretty great film.

My thoughts after finally seeing this on Monday .....

There are a lot of convenient things that happen in this movie, with very little explanation ..... they either just are or just happen, with little to no prior development (some of it because of Singer's intent to retcon):

  • Kitty Pryde suddenly being able to manipulate time.
  • Eric and Mystique conveniently showing up in important locations midway thru the 2nd act and into the 3rd, one of which was one Eric was aboard the train merging metal into the Sentinels. Actually for most of the movie they're easily getting whisked around to where the plot needed them.
  • I still don't understand how Eric was able to command the Sentinels' artificial intelligence, technically he should've only had control over their bodies.
  • Beast conveniently having set up a newsroom taping all three networks and then his gizmo for messing with the security systems at the Pentagon. The most well-guarded building on the planet sure seemed easy-breezy for the group to waltz into.
  • Beasts formula sure did a damn good job restricting Charle's powers, but such a poor job of his own, which was why it was made in the first place
  • Trasks grudge with the Mutants just happens. There was no real reason to fear them and become "the new war" ...... until that scene in Paris, but even then was that situation so becoming of declaring war on this new sub-species?
  • The future sentinels being able to replicate mutant powers even though Mystique is not able to do that and it's her DNA that gave them that ability.

Surprisingly this movie didn't have quite the amount of "throwaway" characters I initially thought it might. The nostalgia of the 70's was fun. The movie has a slightly rocky shift from jokes to dead-on serious once Wolverine locates Charles and they break Eric out, but the exchanges between Eric and Charles are what drive the emotions of this film .... especially that scene on the plane. The Quicksilver scene was fun, but makes literally no sense why a mutant with that kind of power wouldn't have been taken a long for the rest of the ride. I thought the end scene when Wolverine wakes up was perfectly sentimental in all the right ways. It's the kind of thing most people have day dreamt about at one time or another when it comes to changing their pasts.

I'm quite bored of the war on mutants story though. I thought the future Sentinels designs were poor compared to their 70's counterparts (would've preferred to see much more of them). Speaking of the future, can they please stop suiting these guys up in that ugly black pleather? While this movie takes off emotionally, the action scenes were lackluster, most of which consisted of Mystique beating up on defenseless extras. For being the only guy who could travel back in time, Wolverine essentially became an onlooker for most of the movie.

I give it a 7.0 - 7.5 ..... The first trailer that came out wasn't lying, this movie was attempting to show a more emotional side of the franchise. The issue for me is it became a little too brooding, which caused some of the movie to drag for me. I'm actually more interested to see what happens with Apocalypse, because it's a fresher story to tell.

I agree with most of your points Rock.. It was a good movie, but I felt sad that:
a) the return of the future Xavier was not explained,
b) how wolverine had adamantium claws in the future when the Silver samurai ripped them out of his claws in the last movie
c) how future Xavier is still in the wheelchair when the past one had given up his powers to walk again.. does that mean in the past, Xavier would give up his walking for the greater good of mutants again? if so, what was the point in going back to change his mindset?
d) the dialogue from future Xavier about Mystique being his sister sounded forced, since there was no emotional connection in any of the past movies..
e) If the american government considered Magneto to have killed JFK, how come he was allowed to walk around in X1; shouldnt the government be tracking him or wouldnt they have brought it up in the parliamentary discussions?

Plot: In the apocalyptic future, the X-Men face their most threatening enemy, the mutant hunting Sentinels. The battle for their survival is out of their hands, and are left only to change the past. Wolverine is sent back to warn the younger Charles Xavier and Magneto of this grim future, and must attempt to stop the events that will lead up to the rise of the Sentinels.

Review: Opening with a dark future and seeing these characters finally kick ass, along with Bryan Singer’s “X-Men theme” automatically drew me in, knowing that this was going to be one hell of a movie. The story in this movie was great, as it had heart to it, and wasn’t overly complicated. Possibly what made this movie, were the characters, both from the original cast and the new cast. If one is looking for pointless mass destruction throughout the whole two hour film, they will be disappointed, as this brings something refreshing, action sequences that are only necessary, and most important of all, have heart. Let’s start with the past. Fassbender and Mcavoy are brilliant again as Magneto and Xavier, as the chemistry between the two is so real. Lawrence as Mystique was also great, as her character grew from the last film, and is still growing. Seeing Hugh Jackman interact with the new cast was a perfect. Also, Dinklage was great as the Bolivar Trask. Possibly the new frontrunner (no pun intended) and best sequence of the movie was Quicksilv- I mean, Pietro Maximoff, played wonderfully by Evan Peters. The prison break sequence was brilliant, witty, and proved that the X-Men Quicksilver can have just as much chops as the Avenger’s. The Future. While it would have been nice to see a tiny bit more of the future cast, the moments they were shown, oh did they shine, and the action sequences once again were awesome. As you can see I’m just rambling about so much in this movie, and that is simply because there is so much great and wonderful things about this film. And the ending, will leave fans so satisfied, and that is all I will say. Fans of the X-Men comic and films can take a seat and relax as this is the best installment of the series by far.

5/5

Well despite Trask's technological advancements in the 70s, it only took them so far. Xavier even says it took less than five decades before the future Sentinels were unleashed. :D.

I recently watched X1 and there's a scene where Xavier can't figure out how Magneto is blocking his telepathy; yet in First Class he clearly knows it's his helmet that's blocking it. :)

After seeing the movie twice I can say without a doubt it's my favorite of the series. My expectations were through the roof for it and it exceeded them. My assorted thoughts on the various characters/actors:

-Wolverine: Jackman nailed it. He's never embodied the character better in any of the other movies. And he didn't have to hog the screentime from other characters to do it.

-Xavier(McAvoy): Everyone I saw it with agrees he was outstanding. His performance was emotional, funny, and real. He makes Xavier truly interesting. I was captivated by his character much more than Magneto's (which is saying something). Really enjoyed the use of his powers to take control of people at the airport to talk to Mystique.

-Magneto (Fassbender): Great turn by Fassbender as usual. He's great in everything he's in. The use of his powers in the movie was very creative. I most of all enjoy the small power displays like the bullet bending and his use of magnetism to propel himself and jump on the moving train. Great stuff!

-Mystique: Wasn't too impressed by Lawrence's performance and the makeup/suit on my first view but after the second I'd say it was a great improvement over FC. Her action scenes were well done and oddly enough, the 3D may have made the suit look better and more textured.

-Beast: Sort of underused but I thought he fulfilled his purpose just fine. I was disappointed that they didn't address his finally accepting his blue form like I thought they would. The makeup was much improved over FC as well, the only thing that made it look slightly goofy was the hair which they need to fix in the next one. His best moment imo was after Magneto immobilizes him in the fountain and everyone is taking pictures of him and he roars at them helplessly.

Quicksilver: Amazing! Not much more I can say about his action scene that hasn't been said. Instead, I'll add that Evans' performance was great. His dialogue with Fassbender was hysterical (particularly the whiplash and karate lines). I can't explain how satisfied I am with the fact that so many people have to take back all they said about him from the early covers :hehe:

Trask: Unlike most people it seems, I thought Dinklage was alright. He just didn't have as much to work with when compared to his other character, Tyrion.

Xavier (Stewart): So pleased to have amazing monologue back. Scene with McAvoy gave me chills. Hoverchair is beyond perfection. I'm actually fine with the lack of elaboration on how he's back. I feel like Singer & co. realize how weak the explanation was and decided to just roll with it instead of drawing attention to it.

Magneto (McKellen): Underused definitely but what little we got was great. I'll mention here that as amazing as McAvoy and Fassbender are, they just lack that grace and elegance that their older counterparts have. Maybe it's an age thing or perhaps the theatre background. But when McKellen waves his hands around and lifts the blackbird, I buy it. Fassbender's jazzhands are a little awkward sometimes.

Kitty: I'm fine with the time travel secondary mutation (it doesn't seem that unrelated to her powers when compared to, say, Emma's diamond form). But it might have been nice to at least address it. Also liked that Page had a bigger role.

Storm: Liked that even with the super limited screen time, they were able to get across that she was in command of the defense of the temple. Not much, but it's something as I was expecting nothing but sfx from her. That said, her power displays were better than anything in previous movies. Very impressed by her tempest taking down the sentinel carriers.

Iceman/Colossus: Zilch character-wise for both. The realization for their powers was great though. Most impressed by iceman's iceslide which was perfect.

Bishop, Blink, Warpath, Sunpot: The action sequences in the future were absolutely outstanding. Loved the teamwork. I was surprised that each of them was mentioned by name and that Kitty mentioned specifically what each of their rolls was (Blink scouting locations, Warpath detecting sentinels, etc). I suppose that's the difference between Singer and Ratner's use of background mutants. Blink was the highlight for me. Her power usage was especially creative and clever and will probably take multiple viewings and slowing down to understand everything that is going on.

Sentinels: I liked both sentinel designs. The past one looked more classic and also had to look non-threatening so it would be believable as something people would accept. The future ones were freaky. Don't understand the complaints about them being too powerful/too short/etc. They have to be unstoppable so it's believable that the X-Men have no other choice but to go through with this ludicrous plan. And the size is logical so that they'll be able to effectively track down and combat mutants in enclosed places.

Only negative things I can think of:
-No big action scene for Wolverine and absolutely nothing for him in the future
-As has been mentioned, Magneto's precise control of the sentinels didn't make a lot of sense. I noticed on my second view that he was studying the schematics while stitching himself up but it's still a little hard to buy.

Final thoughts:
-I liked that the previous inconsistencies of the series were largely ignored. Don't see why the movie should waste time trying to fix errors. Probably would have come off as cheesy anyway. Also liked that Singer didn't shy away from showing Origins and X3 flashbacks. As much as people would like to ignore them, they were part of the story and even Singer referenced the notable parts of those films.
-The ending is so perfect. It's such a perfect way to end that timeline and possibly say goodbye to these versions of the characters while also keeping it open ended.
-I am certain that was a send off to the OT cast and that the films will continue in the past. Logan's mention of Jean, Scott, and Ororo is an obvious hint. A more subtle clue that I picked up on my second view (and which I haven't seen discussed) was Xavier's monologue during the final scene. It was delivered by McAvoy instead of Stewart and seemed to suggest that the past is a new and unexplored place where further stories can be told (I can't remember the actual line).
-It's brilliant that the only thing future writers/directors have to worry about continuity-wise is that final future scene. As long as they don't contradict anything shown in that short scene, no inconsistencies can be created. How can they possibly mess that up?

10/10 for me. Took X2's spot as my favorite. It has all of X2's mature and sharp storytelling with an added closeness to the comics that I've never seen before in the X-movies. :xmen:

At work today some co-workers were talking about the movie. They told me it was too much talking and not enough action. Also they said it was a bit confusing. That seems to be the consensus with most people that mention it to me. It seems that most people forget about or didn't see first class. They are going in straight from wolverine 2 and are lost.

I don't know why people are confused about Magneto's ability to control the sentinels. He embedded them with metal, therefore he was able to control all of their physical attributes (arms, legs, etc) despite their programming.

Basically, all the contradictions in the original timeline still hold. It's like they wall papered over a hole in the wall. It's still there, but you don't have to look at it anymore.:hehe:

Not to mention the fact that he stole the plans for the sentinels from the meeting room at the Paris Peace Conference. He knew them inside and out.

Just got back and it was pretty damned awesome.

Yeah, I saw one reaction like this on Facebook, they complained about the lack of action, even called it terrible because of the lack of action. I think some of the movie goers expect action equivalent to Avengers, Man of Steel etc.. when it comes to these superhero movies. So the fact that this movie focuses more on character drama and arcs might be disappointing to some people, and especially when the plot is confusing because they didn't watch the other movies prior. Can't please everyone, but this shouldn't be surprising. I myself thought there was a lot of talking in the film at some parts, but man that didn't affect me watching the movie because I was so into the story and the performances were good.
