If it's just his voice, it could work, but, yeah, he'd still be recognizable as Ronan.
ya i brought this up before we know kevin has said that he doesnt want this film to be another lets detroy the city and end of the world story but a more smaller scale story like antman was and more of the angle of the issues of being a hero and a kid for peter. So we have to think what villain would work best with the peter stuff they want to do this time.
-Out of those other thieves you mentioned, only Mysterio is going to be carrying a solo film anytime soon. Having a villain who just wants money and fame is a big break from the high-faulting world conquerors and ideologues who showcase most superhero films. Plus, it sticks true to Spidey's small time origins.
And Mysterio doesn't just have to rob banks the whole movie. What if he gets hired to steal some new weapon prototype? What if he takes the whole city hostage with it?
Enver Gjoak was in The Avengers. He was in Guardians
Without blue face paint and downplaying his physical size, he's barely recognizable. If it's just his voice, it could work, but, yeah, he'd still be recognizable as Ronan.

I don't fully disagree with everything you're saying general you bring up some good points, but, I find this statement kind of ironic... if he's a thief he'd just be stealing his special effect equipment/tech, theif's don't pay for things out of pocketMysterio trying to drive Spider-Man mad and make his name by trying to kill dozens of people, isn't a scheme to destroy the city is it? But it does provide higher stakes then Spidey trying to provide some bank having to pay a higher insurance rate doesn't it?
Kilgrave, TDK Joker and Ajax were not trying to destroy cities, but they were clearly worse then just petty thieves, a super hero's first duty is protect human life, stopping murderers seems far more important then stopping a mere thief.
Take Mysterio's talent for mind games away and you take away his trump card, one he has played often, heck he tried to convince Spidey he was going insane in his second appearance back in the Silver Age.
Mysterio should practice asymmetrical warfare, attack Spidey's weakest point (his mind), rather then trying to out muscle him and attack his body. Any villain can steal a weapon prototype, how many could really mess with Spidey's head, maybe him and Gobby, that is about it.
Plus how is Mysterio supposed to make as a theif, look at any big budget movie, special effects are expensive, he would operate at a loss as a thief. Frankly I think it makes more sense if he is a fame obessed psychopath who doesn't really care about money and doesn't care about operating at loss, because his M.O would not make for a very profitable thief.
I've got five bucks that says they're not using Venom in this one! Any takers?![]()

I play 50 pesos that both Carnage and Venom don't appear.I'll put down $10 that they won't use Carnage in the MCU Spider-Man movies.

that's like saying robbing a bank would be to expensive cause you have to buy a get-a-way car

Mystero fan here. I prefer him having some kind of magic source or something. I believe the movie special effects is dated.
I feel having him make illusions out of magic makes much more sense. You could even have him be sort of a magician who can't find work. No one in NYC is hiring him. He's used his powers solely for money (which Spidey did at first) and now people are sort of done with him. He sees all the love people give this Spider-Man & decides to try the villain act. Have big illusions in NYC fighting the Spider. Imagine an illusion of King Kong or Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (since both took place in NYC & you got Sony Ghostbusters product placement there) fighting the Spider.
I just feel Mysterio spending his time with movie special effects feels too much like Chameleon. I've always felt Chameleon to be a very practical guy. A Macguver of sorts. He did after all build robots of Peter's parents. Why would Mysterio make robots & rob banks with said robots like dude you just built a robot. Meanwhile Mysterio is much more about entertainment. Him being an out of work magician fits in with him being a out of work special effects guy.
I love Mysterio, maybe it's me but I just feel him having & learning magic stuff like the stuff of Dr Strange to pull off illusions & using that power to make money (Excellent foil for Spider-Man) makes the character be more creative & free. I just feel that while I love Mysterio, he is a villain who needs a reinvention a bit in terms of backstory.

Make him a practical effects guy who lost his job to CGI. That would feel very timely in today's world.
