Chris Nolan.

-He respects the source material.

-He respects the fans.

-He makes movies that are complex, but accessible for the average viewer, and acceptable for all audiences.

-He knows how to tell a story on film, by jumping around in time. He knows how to do it well, and make it work.

Not Nolan...I don't want my Captain America Grounded in Reality, nor do I want choppy fight scenes, I want super science and spectacular martials I can actually see along with a brilliant story.

My choices are Speilberg, Raimi, Jackson, or Faverau

Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, Narc)
Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights, The Rundown)
Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo, October Sky, The Rocketeer)
Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Swingers, Jumper)
Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Gangster No. 1, The Reckoning, Wicker Park)

Oh, and Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, Boogie Nights).

I doubt he'd do an action movie, but I'd love to see his take on one. The man's one of the best directors I've ever seen. He'd give this movie a visual style unlike any super hero movie we've seen.

TOM HANKS! He did a great job with the period film, THAT THING YOU DO, he has produced WWII projects, and he is the biggest Marvel Comics Fan of any of the directors listed!

Tom Hanks is a Marvel fan? I never heard that. Cool if it's true.

While promoting THAT THING YOU DO, Hanks likened directing to being Black Bolt - your smallest whisper being devastating!

While promoting EARTH TO THE MOON, he compared a returning moon rocket to the hammer of Thor!

Sounds like a Marvel Man to me, and the kind of guy who should be directing a Marvel movie! His obvious interest in WWII makes him a good choice for Cap!

Anyone mention Paul Greengrass. He did the Bourne sequels. The action improved from Supremacy (shaky) to Ultimatum (much clearer). They both had a great look, good performances, and similar issues i could see going on in a Cap movie

Oh, well I never saw either of those. Good to know at any rate, though.:woot:

If we're going actor-turned-director, I like the idea of George Clooney. (Good Night and Good Luck, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the upcoming Leatherheads). The man has obvious behind-the-camera talent, as he was nominated for GNAGL, a love to period films, and he would raise the movie's profile considerably, especially if he played a supporting role as well.

One more nice choice might be Tony Gilroy. As a screenwriter, he crafted The Bourne trilogy and then, in his directorial debut, received an Oscar-nomination for Michael Clayton. The man is talented.

I could see Peter Jackson directing this, why not?

I wouldnt mind taking a look at a Nolan directed Cap movie, but I bet he is done with Superheroes after Batman.

I pick Ed Zwick. Between Glory, Last Samurai, Courage Under Fire, and Blood Diamond, the only challenge for him with the material would be to tone it down to a PG-13.

^^^Good choice.Bit of a dark horse pick which I like being a filmfan first and a comic geek second.

Hell yes. That's the guy I'm holding out for from now on.

Holy ****! I totally forgot about him. He is THE director for Captain America. I was pushing hard for him to get Superman Returns, and then I guess he slipped my mind.

The guy is a brilliant director who could rock this movie and, hell, The Avengers movie too.

So that Nick Cassavettes rumor from a while back was shot down?

What makes you say that?

I dont know, he just seems like he would want to go back to smaller stuff like Memento or The Prestige when TDK, or possibly a trilogy, is done.

If he continues his success with Batman, I don't see why he would. He's obviously good at it.

Nolan's overrated, ESPECIALLY when it comes to "respecting the source material." There's precious little in common between the Batman in Begins and the Batman you read about in comics.

Neither does he show any great interest in superheroes in general... he just likes Batman, and a grounded Batman at that. He's not going to take on other Superhero projects... that's naive thinking: "He likes one of my fave superheroes, he must like them all!"

The key issue, aside from action scenes that Nolan is disinterested in (he can hire a choreogrpaher just as well as anyone else, Nolan chooses not to have good action, as an artistic choice), a big part of the Captain America is the America part. A movie about Captain America that fails to unite WWII-Era American Idealism and the cynicism and American corruption of today is hollow, a heartless soulless movie -- like Hitman. Why bother making it, if you don't get to the heart and soul of the character's beliefs?

Ordinarily I'd go with Doug Liman, just because guys like Spielberg don't really work on other people's inventions, Jackson isn't really all that dependable sometimes, and guys like Sam Raimi don't always transfer well just because comic book properties are involved. But at the same time I don't believe Liman has the... ideological range to make the kind of Cap movie that needs to be made.

My vote? Wachowski brothers. They've got action, they've got range, strong themes and real heart, PLUS they'll work on the properties of others, and as long as they strike a balance between far flung theoretics (Matrix 2&3) and uber kitschy cyberpop (Speed Racer) they could make a very clean subtly grounded Captain America movie.

Can't believe no ones menitioned one of the Scott Brothers. Ridley or Tony Scott could make a great comic book movie. Not sure if Cap would be right for them but if we are throwing names in the hat.

The director will most likely be someone we never thought of. Comic Book movies are quite random when it comes to selecting directors.

...huh...Well the Wachowskis are actually brilliant choices. Really liking that idea there. They can do great subtle moments and at the drop of the hat go over the top at just the right levels. I really support this choice.

I like their vision as directors but dont let them touch the screenplay, i think they're writing is real subpar.
