... from Thor to The Avengers?

Have looked high and low for the answer, and no one seems to know. I just received "The Art of Marvel's Avengers" book, and was certain the answer would be in there ...but it wasn't.

Has anyone heard an official explanation?

I think they mainly just changed the handle and some slight decorative stuff on the hammerhead so it's really not too different. They probably just wanted a little change for his appearance in The Avengers versus in Thor.

same reason Thor's armor changed and Loki's. They want to get a consistent look for Avengers, not for Thor.

I actually didn't notice.

Can you compare the two Mjolnirs in a picture perhaps?

You have to think of MCU films as live-action comic books.

Comics each have different runs with different writers and different artists who write and draw the characters differently. But those comics still exist in the same universe and continue ongoing stories for the same characters.

You will see the same characters in all MCU films, but they may appear different (different actors or suit designers) and may interact a little differently (different writers and directors), but they are still the same exact character that appeared in previous films. That goes for their outfits and weapons as well.

I figured they would be the same hammer. What's different about the two?

They changed the handle slightly. Most noticeably by adding a silver pommel to the end. Otherwise they're virtually identical. I don't really see what the big deal is.

I liked Hammer, from Thor and Avengers I couldnt even tell the differance between them, I'm just glad they didnt go the Ultimates route with that big wacky Hammer..that was little to loud and proud

Mjolnir from the Avengers is on the left and the one from Thor is on the right.

Yet, none of the Avengers toys reflect the changes. Yeah I noticed the change as soon as they showed Mjolnir for Avengers.

Well, it's a named item. An Item of Power. It probably gained a level somewhere, and that reflects in its appearance.

:P

Point taken, but that's outside the Marvel world. Inside that world, how do you justify Mjolnir being changed? We can understand the costume changing, but the hammer?

Perhaps that end cap was damaged when Thor smashed the Bifrost with it... Does the end cap of Mjolnir affect any of its magical Uru properties? Could it be replaced?

Thanks. Interesting that they modified the handle slightly even though it was hardly noticeable to me in the film. Most people wouldn't. Methinks the hammer used in Thor was slightly damaged, judging by the picture, so they just created a new hammer, with a different production designer of course.

Wouldn't be easy to replace. Odin said during the coronation it was forged in the heart of a dying star. Whatever, if it's meant literally or not I don't think Thor can go a blacksmith "Hey I broke my hammer can you fix it?"

Imo nobody of the production designers cared about the slightly changes.

Except it doesn't look like that end cap of the hammer would have been "forged," per se. Especially since it looks like it has been added to the hammer from the Thor movie.
