Why did you start to smoke...

I understand what you are saying but to go outside when it is -1 outside is a bit crazy to me even if it allows a feeling of euphoria with less of the after effects.

Plus NR, you are an extremely light smoker with less then 1 ciggarette every 3 days on average, therefore for you to stop would seem to be easy. Your smoking seems to have become completely social which therefore means that smoking has not been curbed in Europe despite alll the sanctions created.
I guess that euphoria in most heavier smokers is experienceds as a moment's relief from the anxiety that must build up preforming usual daily tasks and they have become dependant on this release, so much so that if they don't have it, their anxiety heightens to a degree where they can no longer function without it. Such is the effect of nicotine, it will drive people to put themselves through uncomfortable conditions.

I know i'm light but i still class myself as one since i do smoke, and so does everyone else. Ah yes i would stop but at my current rate based on studies shown, i don't think i'm increasing my chances of getting lung cancer by anything significant, especially since i generally keep a healthy lifestyle.

well in the Uk, there are no major sanctions against it now, the age limit is still 16 (which i feel is incredibly young if you consider 12 yr olds can get their hands on them, it should be 18 like alcohol) and also legislation hasn't yet come into place to ban it from indoor public areas (which happens from the 1st of july) and the warnings on the packet are pretty much unaffective. If anything, it's a form of light banter between smokers comparing the way each one says the owner is going to die.

in all honesty, I don't think the UK wants people to stop smoking, they only wish to cover their asses by looking out for the non-smokers and putting warnings on packets so they are longer held responsible for the welcare of their people. The revenue it brings in via extra tax is simply too high a commodity to ignore and that's why it will never be banned...

i believe the same goes for alcohol.

I have noticed that almost all the girls here in Geneva and in Paris I see in their 20s are smokers. They all tend to tell me that they started because it was cool, whenever it is discussed (albeit not that often as there tend to be more interesting things to do then discusss smoking). But I did not think smoking was so cool in the 90s.

Now my question to you, and really more to the ladies then to the men:

1. if you smoke today or had smoked, what motivated you to start?

2. If you have stopped, what was the instigator?

3. For those who still smoke, hasn't it become so inconvenient as to take away whatever pleasure you derive from it?

1. a pretty girl who smoked motivated me to start. that, and i had to smoke for some photographs i did.

2. i stopped because i just stopped. i think i just want to see if i can do it.

3. and no, most definitely not. you can ban smoking in public places, you can make it the biggest hassle on earth, but it'll still be enjoyable.

Interesting thread. Love to stick around and chat about the subject, but it's FRIDAY and the workday's ovaaahhhh!

**Prog grabs his keys and turns off the light**

I'll have to catch up with the topic on Monday if it's still hanging around> :)

I started smoking to look cool . . . the sad part is, I didn't realize that's what I was doing when I started  so I'll just blame it on peer pressure

1. Started at the age of 15 when my friends, who smoked, handed me a cigarette. I took a couple drags and have basically been a smoker ever since.

2. Stopped for a year or two between 18 and 20. Mostly because I wasn't really that much of a smoker and I was really into my skateboarding so I really wasn't thinking about smoking. But I eventually started again

3. It hasn't become a hassle for me. The only problem I have recently is that here in Pittsburgh they just passed a new law where you aren't allowed to smoke in certain public places and if you smoke outside it has to be five feet from the doorway or you're fined up to 300 dollars

Meh. I smoke but I'm not addicted. I was disgusted by them at first but like, now, whatever. I don't mind it. But I only smoke when I'm offered one. And that's like, maybe once every few months. :csad:

haha..."one every few months"??

you're not a smoker, my friend, don't kid yourself.

instead of saying, "i smoke", the response should be, "i've had a cigarette before"...

once every few months...man...try once every few minutes and get back to me about addiction...

I found it to be a really great stress relief.

I was just guesstimating but yeah, prettty much. I'm not dependent on it. Didn't know the term smoker was specifically for people who were addicted. My bad. Sorry for offending. :o

it's just a little ******ed to talk about not having an addiction to something you don't have experience in, you know?

i mean, i read your post thinking, "of course he's not addicted...he doesn't smoke!"

sorry, if i'm being mean...i'm a little cranky.

Well I read and hear about how easy it is to get hooked on and I just ain't getting it. I'm worse with caffeine. And yeeesh, withdrawal is a betch when it comes to anything.

i don't think you can call yourself "franklin richards" and smoke...it's just not allowed.

Smoke what? :o I miss pot. :csad:

I would puke when I tried to smoke cigs so that never caught on. On some rare occasions I might smoke if I'm totally trashed. I was smoking cigars for a bit,not often maybe once every few months, real cigars not the slims or whatever.

Didn't really have a reason. I tried it once, and I picked it up. I'm currently trying to quit. It really is a disgusting habit.

Cigars are nice to smoke but once you're hooked,it's just hard to let go.

No. My family was always against it, so I was raised that way. Also, when my grandfather died from lung cancer after smoking for a while that scared me. I was really close to him. The only one in the family that wasn't such a tightwad.

I didn't smoke infront of others for about a year after starting, the majority of people still don't know i started when i did...

if anything it was out of curiosity that started me and boredome that kept me going. Smoking does have this way of joining two activities together more smoothly..

ie....you finish watching tv and then you have a ciggarette before you go to do some work, then before you retire for the evening, you have another one...

I used to have one before i went to bed on my balcony just to help get some alone time and put some thoughts that were in my head into perspective.

it's always been a fairly light habbit and outside influences from other smokers has never really allowed it to grow, i'm not easily influenced by others.
I noticed it says "Single MOther" under your name. Are you not ithat concerned about being around as your child/children get older?? Seeing as how smoking has been directly linked to cancer, which there is no cure for, why would you keep smoking, but to ensure that you get cancer??

1) I used to smoke Cigs alot. I stopped though. I only smoke Trees now. I started as a way to release my misguided stresses over losing my fiance. that was over 3 years agos.

2) I stopped because it's truly an addiction, and I rather not be ruled by a chemical addiction. I chose to go cold turkey and have been nicotine free ever since.

I don't want to sound rude, but how did you start smoking from stress? Did you just suddenly say to yourself "I'm really stressed. I guess I'll start smoking", or was it something else?

I used to be one of those types that would go "you smoke....ewwww" and write it off to bad decision making. Then when my fallout with my love happend....I ended up looking for ways to forget. Heavy Drinking, Large amounts of Weed, X, Shrooms, Acid, and Cigs. Cigs and Weed were the only ones that remained. Now I just chief religiously.
