Why Is Mark Millar So Popular In Hollywood?

Nemesis...already? Wow, I didn't know it had caught that many influential Hollywood eyes...hrum..

I think it has something to do with just the fact that his work sells as a movie because you can tell he kinda writes his stuff like movies. Even in wanted the characters looked like real actors/celebrities (Eminem, Tommy Lee Jones, Halle Berry). So that said Hollywood sees him as a natural fit/ go to guy. People like violence, sex, and cool moments, and what ifs. Millar's works is basically that and it has an audience.

Everyone wondered what if there was a real superhero, what if the villains won, or if batman were evil, etc. So he does it, puts it in a hollywood format in the comics, then Hollywood itself goes, "Lets make this movie!" Plus, they don't seem like they cost a lot to make. Just my opinion.

Nemesis I believe is only 3 issues in and it's freakin' ridiculous, yet I can't put it down. You just want to know what the guy's gonna do next. He's like 5 steps ahead of everyone all the time. Like I said, ridiculous.

He writes his **** to BECOME adaptations that's why. He expected Hollywood to come to him and offer to translate his books to the screen. That's why so many fanboys say he's a sellout. And to some extent I agree.

Maybe he's just a bit more honest about that in interviews, and a lot of other cb writers think the same way when they are doing their mini-series etc these days, secretly hoping their stuff gets picked up for a movie deal.
30 Days of Night was originally a movie pitch that got knocked back, they turned it into a comic afterwards in the hope that it would be successful and then turned into a movie. So he is not the only one, the 30days people couldn't hide the fact they were putting it in comic form with the hope/intention of a movie deal, as they had pitched it as a movie first, but maybe others just hide this type of ambition in case they are labelled as sell outs, whereas Millar doesn't give a **** and will just tell it like it is.

Well, he is supposed to be an evil version of Batman, so if you can't see the sense in that type of origin then i don't know what to tell you.
Maybe he should be getting revenge for folk taking the piss out of his grammar/writing skills?

very true very juvenile dialogue lol

when we have an issue called crime is awesome and so am i that is all you need to know lol

I think some of his ideas for gags can be juvenile, but his dialogue is very good.

I don't mind that title at all, sometimes it's good to keep it simple and punchy.

wonder who he will get for the lead tho little flash back we got showed he has blonde hair

Maybe Jude Law

His stuff just takes basic familiar elements and just produces very over the top work that just celebrates the worst elements of the heroes. He's like a bad copy of mid-80's Frank Miller, except he just stumbles through stuff (those huge battles) and all his characters come off as schmucks and a holes. Ultimates to me was everything I was happy to see Marvel not do, up until that point. I was happy it wasn't the main continuity.

Hollywood digs his stuff because he doesn't give a crap how much they change his work. Probably because keep down, he knows he isn't making anything that special.

^ Yeah his Ultimate U work does have his characters come of as asses. I was kinda disappointed Ultimatum didn't actually kill the entire Ultimate U.

Mark Millar is so popular in Hollywood because he gives them exactly what they want in an R-rated movie. Mindless shock-value action with a dark anti-hero processed in such a way that all the R-rated material feels forced and unfocused rather than levitate the material, and add so much free publicity because all the news media has to talk about it.

of all the creator in comics to choose from...sigh

I think part of the reason Millar's stuff is so popular is that it has a good chance of appealing to the comic/action fan community and the hipster fanbase.

A better question is "Why does everyone hate Mark Millar?"

And the answer is, because he's so popular.

I think he's a shred business man.

I like the guy and he's talented, but I do think he's very, very, very hyperbolic.

I cant answer for everyone but my reasons for disliking him have everything to do with how he acts and not because he is popular.
How many times has he said something that other people have come out and said was false?
He is a popular writer and people look up to him but he acts like that person that feels the need to lie to make himself feel important.

That and I just hate the stories he comes up with to appeal to people who don't normally want to read Superhero comics. Having long standing characters kill doesn't make them edgy or modern, it just sacrifices what makes them heroes and turns them into just more run of the mill vigilantes and schmucks.

Also, unlike someone like Frank Miller or Alan Moore, his style is just obnoxious because of all the stupid pop culture references, and juvenile references to sex & rape.

And his popularity doesn't effect how I feel about him directly, but more the fans read his stuff who don't see how hollow it really is.

I think he just goes the politically incorrect route for the sake of it, and all those fanboys who hate the P.C. backlash or whatever, they ******e that.

He has some good ideas but he is a most unoriginal writer. The majority of characters he comes up with are some sort of spin on a DC or Marvel character. That I can live with though I guess.

What I dont like is that his storytelling is cheap and lacks elegance: He forces popular culture in his narrative and he goes way too far with his sexually perverted concepts.

And, yet, Kick-Ass turned out to be a great movie.

Me personally I don't hate Millar, although some of his stuff just involves certain things for the sake of them being there. He's talented, and can write some good stuff, but mostly when he takes on established characters he does so in a way that doesn't fit, civil war is a good indication of this. His Ultimate work is pretty good, but since no one really cares about that universe if there's a piece of good work there I think that's great.

His current Ultimate U stuff is good (to me) and even kick-ass was good, but Millar is a guy that shines best when he writes his own stuff. As for originality, there is no such thing imo. Once the door is open it's open. Everyone has a punisher, a hulk, some type of billionaire hero, and most importantly the Jesus archetype figure that can do any and everything, and those are just a few types that come to mind. His work can be hit and miss, but business is business and everyone needs money. So if he can get his shine on, then let the dude shine.
