Why Is Mark Millar So Popular In Hollywood?

He's probably one helluva salesman when he's pitching his properties. I hated both Wanted and Kick-Ass, but those movies are picture perfect for Hollywood. Low budget with mindless action has a very profitable market. Sure there are plenty of other mindless action comics that are better written than Millar's IMO, but he sells what he has better than those guys that don't get their movies made.

Or he could have some really good connections. Either way, he knows how to work his way through Hollywood to get his stuff on screen.

I think he's a business man first, then writer.

The Michael Bay of Comics, if you will.

Because Mark Millar understands the base-tastes of the masses, of pop-culture and drags em where it sells. Though arguably he's still a writer who writes from his heart (where his heart is would be another question) and contrary to popular belief, he isn't an example for a sell-out. No. Grant Morrison is. Millar is doing what any comic writer would do in his place - he is letting his work being translated onto the screen.

Alex Ross and Mark Waid make comics that are arguably more Hollywood (or planned out as 'films' to begin with), as does BMB, but Millar gets his original books adapted because he knows how the majority of the movie goers who are into comic-adapted films will react. It's almost like the 90s all over again - only this time it's on the Big Screen.

People don't hate him because he is popular, they hate him because of Wanted.

why is Morrison a sell out

I think Mark Millars Comics are Satire of the Superhero genre

why is Morrison a sell out

Come now, you know that Morrison always appeals to the lowest common denominator and the masses with his comics. Remember that big dumb action epic Final Crisis? Wasn't that a riot?

It'a because his concepts are unique. I've always like Millar... for his ideas. Not so much his execution. The guy can come up with great ideas, that can then be translated into film and executed in a much more coherant fasion.

Think about it, you've got all these stereotypical, cliche superhero movies. Then you have the Mark Millar superhero movies. Where they are totally different and "out there". They take the cliches of superheroes, turn them on their heads, then **** all over them. And people who are getting sick and tired of cliche superhero movies will be attracted to that.

Superhero movies sell big. But the majority of the audience is kids. Kids who bring their parents along, adults who wouldn't go and see the superhero movie on their own without their kids. Millar's movies appeal to the people who think superheroes are corny and cheesy. And there is actually a lot of people who have that belief.

I dont think the GA is tired of "cliched" heroes....the only people who went to see Kick ass was comic book fans...everyone went to see Iron man and Iron man 2.

We're not sick of comic book movies yet, because there are still handfuls of classic characters we want to see. Besides, the whole satirical deconstruction of the superhero genre has become as cliche as the thing he's trying to skewer.

But then you have the excellent All Star Superman along with the awesome Batman & Robin.

it ticks me off that Hollywood is investing in Millar's drivel when a truely magnificent series like Invincible is ignored

I just reread ultimates: Homeland Security. Good lawd the dialogue is horrendous.

I recently read The Unfunnies by Mark Millar and I can safely say it is the worst comic book I have ever read in my entire life. I give mad props to Mark Millar's wife for throwing that book at him after reading it. I wish I could do the same thing.

Now he's claiming to know who the villain is in Bat 3...riiiight.....one of the most secretive directors in hollywood wouldnt tell his actors but he lets Millar know

I read the third issue of nemesis and it was freaking amazing. I really REALLY hope the movie gets a hard R rating and they shot the prison break panel for panel.

hmm...so far I haven't liked any of his stuff.. :/
I guess I just don't like the cynical nature of his films...I get enough of that in real life. I don't want it in my entertainment too to drag me down into the muck any further. :)
